What makes me so sad is that the moment he decided he was going to do this, she had no chance at all. Very few people are going to fight back against what seems like an arrest by a legit officer. At least with an attack on the street, while ****ing awful, someone may have seen the struggle and helped, or she may have known to fight back. She never had a chance.
It’s so upsetting.

That makes me angry too.

What also makes me angry is listening to every woman who is talking about this. Every woman who is saying that this is how it has always been - this fear. And, they are talking to us. They are talking to me. They are asking me what I am going to do about it.

I think that's the real debate that we as men owe it to women to have. It's the only way we can create a better society. We are not all Wayne Couzens, but we do all have to play a part in changing male behaviour. And we need to call it out and not throw the label 'snowflake' about whenever we do so.

I think this is it.

99.9% of men are appalled and disgusted by violence towards women.

I agree, and I think it is the things that we all just let casually pass that are part of the problem. For example, next time Crodo offers his 'visiting teams most famous supporter' image. Let's ask ourselves what that is reinforcing in our minds about women. I'm not having a crack at Crodo btw and I'm sure he's appalled by this too. It's often unconscious what's happening.

And yes, there are beefcakes in the medi with their tops off, but overwhelmingly women are objectified, I'm sure you'll agree.

The way I see it.

0.001% of blokes have the potential, either through being evil or mentally disturbed to do something like this.

There is some sort of support network, probably incel sites or something, but I'm guessing this is 1 in 1000 of blokes or maybe less.

I can't get in their heads to work out if objectification/modelling etc contributes to what they're thinking at the time, but my instinct says they would do it anyway and that humans should be allowed to find other humans attractive as long as everyone is consenting adults

You have a higher opinion of your fellow men than i do. Oh and 0.1% is one in a thousand.

15 women have been killed by police in the last 12 years, the majority were 'domestic incidents'.

There needs to be a lot more accountability in police forces.

As you see with anything Football related - the Police are a law upon themselves, close rank quickly and very rarely admit fault - unless they really have to. It does not surprise me that people like Couzens 'slip through the net.'

I have a friend in a force (not Sussex) and some of the stories he tells me are unbelievable. Some very minor offences get blown massively out of proportion with sanctions, yet more serious allegations don't always get the attention they deserve

This is truly shocking that 52% of OB guilty of sexual misconduct were allowed to keep their jobs. This is where it is all going wrong. The police protecting the police. Oh, there's a surprise.

Did Priti Patel and Cressida Dick know he had 'arrested' her, whilst in uniform, when they sent the police in, against the women holding the vigil?

I am holding them responsible for the unlawful behaviour of the police, so people don't think I am just on an anti-men rant.

Agree that there are huge problems with policing in this country and agree that people who go to football home and away have known this for years.

Loads just sign up for the power it gives them. At times they can just act like organised thugs, though at times there is actual policing to do, like outside Wembley in the summer, they stay in their vans or pick off someone small and unthreatening who wasn't involved

Whilst believing that a massive majority of police officers are a good honest bunch of hard working men and women, striving to do a near impossible job in ever more trying circumstances, there is an awful lot in what you say.

Until an independent body is set up to oversee police procedures nothing will change for the better.

And it's not just police.

https://plan-uk.org/media-centre/almost-two-thirds-of-women-feel-unsafe-walking-alone-after-dark

Almost two thirds of adult women (63%) in Britain say they feel unsafe walking alone after dark. Almost half (48%) felt the same way when they were of school age.

This is in contrast to one third (33%) of adult men and (35%) of men when they were of school age. Men and women living in urban areas felt more unsafe than those living in rural areas. *

This means that every other woman we walk past today will feel unsafe on the streets. It means our mothers, sisters, daughters, whether they admit it or not, feel unsafe on the street. I think we need to start asking them why, and what it is that men do - consciously or unconsciously - that make them feel unsafe.

I really can't offer many answers but I do know he needs to receive a whole life term and the Met need to be investigated as to how he became an Officer with, presumably being a Diplomatic Protection Officer, access to firearms.

Edit: He just got a whole life order. At least the judiciary did it's job.

My own opinion is that males feel entitled to leer and jeer when younger, but then change their minds when they become Dads themselves.

It will take men telling other men not to treat women like objects, but so many want to be in line with their peers, they won't.

Schools don't help. One story I read was about a young girl of 13 kept getting her bra strap pinged by a boy in her class. Her parents complained but the teacher laughed, until the Dad said he would report it to the police, who would treat it as a sexual assault.
The school then took it seriously.
A small matter you may say, but a step in the right direction.

I'm glad there's a whole life sentence. It was appropriate here.

Separately I do think that whether this sentence is issued shouldn't be as a result of media profile of the case. I think it should also be used in other lower profile cases

I was standing in a queue after a Brighton match, one young man was talking about his antics while on holiday, doing the full a "Jay" from inbetweeners "I shagged all these girls, right sl@gs" etc etc not seeing the irony that he was actually the one behaving like a **nt. It is these attitudes and double standards that make women feel unsafe. That in the minds of some men we are somehow less then them and they can do and say what they like.

When my daughter was 12 in her school uniform walking to and from school had to deal with cat calling and abuse. She is now 19 and does not feel safe walking at night, she does all that she can to make herself feel less vulnerable. This is every girl and every women whether they admit it or not.

Before someone gets cross I know it is not all men.

There is a big difference, I agree.

But why do two thirds of women feel unsafe when walking the streets? That's a question we have to ask.
