I went earlier this year on Eurostar and it was very easy. Booked in advance for just under £50 each way. Also checked out this video before I went with two guys racing from London to Amsterdam and not much difference in the time

As mentioned earlier a lot of the museums should be booked in advance online otherwise you’ll be disappointed. They are all cashless as well so check if you get charged for using your card abroad. I used one of those Travel Money Cards for Asda which is easy to top up and you get straightaway.

Also we got the I Amsterdam card/app which you can get to cover 1-5 days. It covers all your public transport (metro/trams/bus) and also gives you discounts for some museums, attractions and restaurants.

Hope that helps, have a great time.

Fantastic replies - thank you everyone for so many great tips, you’ve really helped shape our little break :)

Is there anything really obvious we’ve missed? What’s safety like in town?

Very safe. Worst that'll happen is pickpocketing but even that's rare these days. Or get hit by a bike if you don't treat the bike path like a second road.

The red light / blue light system in the Red Light District.
Just had to Google that, can’t see being allowed to drag the Mrs into either kind of establishment really

Do you have any advice on the cannabis cafes?

You need to change at Brussels and get separate tickets. Just looking: you can get the Eurostar there for £39 each, then use Trainline to book to Amsterdam for £23. So it should be about £62 each. Or if money is really tight, this train is about 14 euros but wouldn't leave until early evening - you could have lunch and a stroll around in Brussels in the afternoon, if you do that. Either way, the train is a million times nicer than flying.

I'd just go to the Jordaan the whole time. Loads of good places to eat. Pathé Tuschinski cinema is glorious as well. Give me a shout if you want any tips on travel or places to go once you're there.
On the Eurostar website now, on the dates we plan to visit unfortunately it’s £188 just one way to Brussels, then an inconvenient time return for another £100 - plus the train cost from Brussels via the Trainline app, which comes out at a further £150, so priced up that way it works out at £438ish.

Unfortunately a return from either EasyJet (£171.38) or BA is less than half the price. I’d love to go with Eurostar if it worked out more competitive…

Despite what some might say, the Red Light District is pretty safe and worth a wander around for a laugh. Expect to get offered any drug you like but they are not pushy and there are some reasonable bars ( although slight pricey ) bars in the area. Avoid the Sex Show clubs - utter waste of money. Most bars are cash only in the Red Light District.

But many don't factor in their addiction to their cars and what it costs them, fuel, parking and depreciation.

Smug I know, but when I got to Spain (for instance) I use the public transport to get everywhere.

That's from living in London I know, but I'm still amazed at the people I speak to back in Sussex who will happily drive somewhere with all the hassle rather than get on a train.

I used to go to Amsterdam every year, often staying in the worst hotel I have ever stayed in Luton to get the flight early.

Sod that, book the train early. You get there and back fresh and back rather than losing at least a day each side with the sodding airport.

And that airport in Amsterdam is a sodding airport. I hate airports.
We (discerning gentlemen of refinement and perspicacity) are training it for some of the reasons you outline. Hotel sorted. All we need now is matchday tickets. 🥦

Is it still shiksty Euros for a XXXX and a XXXX?

There are some amusing tales I could recount but I'd only get calzone thrown in my face. Again.

Now THAT’S an interesting story. I’ve heard of some interesting sex stuff but never heard of calzone smothering. Kinky. You get fed while you get laid!

I've got a fantastic story but I'm not posting it on here.

Very odd man.

Previous to the incident he was well known at work for his webcam friend and her milk bottle. Subsequent to that he got his secretary pregnant and his his wife left him.

We'll just leave it there.

I was merely mocked.

And rightly so.
