I hate it with all these rose tinted spectacles about Venables. He's only looked upon kindly because he was in the job when Euro 96 was about and English football was feeling good about itself. He didn't have to qualify, and then at the tournament itself we only actually won two matches (and one of those was against Scotland).

The best in recent times has been Bobby Robson. Apparently he did want to stay on psat Italia 90 but the press didn't like him and so he decided to get out. They apologised after we got to the semi-finals. I thought Hoddle was a good coach and should never had gone for the disabled comments. Keegan was the worst choice, even worse than McLaren.
Interesting you can use facts to make one argument against another. So I'm going to do the same.

After 90 minutes...

In Euro 96, we won two (Scotland, Holland), drew three (Switzerland, Spain, Germany).

In Italia 90, we won one (Egypt), drew five (Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Cameroon, West Germany), lost one (Italy - albeit the last one was the 3rd Place Play-Off - virtually a friendly).

Ahh but we won in extra time in two of those games....

Anyway, my point was rather that Venables seem to earn this God like status without actually achieving much.

I still have to stroke my chin and grumble 'hmmm' when I think of Robson's tenure as manager. Did not qualify for Euro 84, were utter shit for the first two games of Mexico 86 (admitedly - he did change it round just in time for the third group match - but that was forced upon him), shite in Euro 88 (lost all three games), successful Italia 90 campaign, but I feel in spite of him, rather than because of him - we made hard work of every game. Not that he had the strongest depths of squad to choose from. mind. Mike Duxbury anyone?

God-like for Venables is far-fetched for me, but I thought he was pretty good. Limp against the Swiss, superb for the second half against Scotland, shit against Holland, obviously... Spain, we were poor, but we could have so easily turned Germany over. Ho-hum.

Redknapp is McLaren and Venables rolled into one...

... and Allardyce. Plus a bit of Stewart Pearce.

U.B., I value your opinion on all things England - who did you vote for? Or isn't your preferred candidate listed?

Latest from BBC

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho does not want to succeed Steve McClaren as England manager, BBC Sport understands.
Mourinho, 44, has been out of football since leaving Stamford Bridge in September but is believed to be waiting for a club rather than a national post.

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce has also said he does not want the England job.

But ex-Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello says he is interested and Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp and Reading's Steve Coppell have not ruled themselves out.
