We would have loved to, but you might have noticed that we didn't get the luck of regularly having our best side available. We had different luck, like starting Matt O'Riley in the EFL v Crawley and having him assaulted after a couple of minutes and out for three months. We had to try to build momentum whilst not being able to pick the same starting eleven for any two consecutive games this season. One thing teams mid table premier league should remember, in the cups play your best side in all rounds in gives momentum whoever you play and you could if lucky win one.
We picked our best available eleven against Forest in the QF whilst on a seven game unbeaten run and sitting two points off fourth. We weren't fortunate enough to get momentum. Instead, we played 120 minutes, went out on penalties, lost one of our two available match fit centre backs and one of our most effective attackers and then lost to Villa a few days later. Had we lost to Chelsea or Newcastle in the cup, rested and won the Villa game, we'd have finished above them and made Europe.
Whatever momentum we did manage ended up being enough to finish well above your lot, so presumably this momentum you wisely developed only came into effect every four weeks or so when you played cup games against the giants of Doncaster, Stockport and Millwall. We got drawn against three different teams that you'd have to admit would most likely have knocked Palace's best team out, considering that you failed to beat any of them home or away this season.
Yes, you got lucky and won the cup. Like Wigan did, and like plenty of other teams have done in the past whilst changing their teams wholesale for cup games. Nobody will ever be able to take the trophy away from you and of course we're all gutted. Perhaps satisfy yourself with that and give the footballing lessons a miss, because 'if lucky' is doing all the heavy lifting in your cliched bon mot.
