I guess the difference there is that Nuns are Married to Jesus whilst the Islamic ladies are married to Mr Khan from the local shop.

Jesus is deffo higher up the foodchain than Mr. Khan, and of course he is'nt around to punch randy customers on the nose if they get improper with the missus.

Unlike Mr. Khan.

I do, however, pretty much agree with what he has said about burqas.
My gut instinct is that he is possibly right, but then again I'm not going to pretend to know what motivates the people who wear these things.

Nevertheless, he shouldn't be commenting on religious matters whilst he holds the position of president IMO.

How else are they going to have a public debate about it?

I think its his responsibility to talk about it if he is the head of a fiercely secular country like France.

France at least has the guts to say that if you want to live in their country you have to abide by accepted norms.

This makes me angry, they should be allowed to wear what the hell they like.
do you really think you would feel quite so strongly about it if you didnt live in virtually burka free worthing , somewhere like tower hamlets or west yorkshire perhaps ? Do you also agree that women should be " allowed to wear what the hell they like "in saudi arabia for instance, where the wearing of a bikini or mini skirt would offend all the socially accepted norms ?or perhaps you believe that us nasty westerners should be more accomodating of local customs when the boot is on the other foot ?

Masking facial expression denies the basics of communication. Apes have used facial expression for millions of years, I can understand why people would feel unease when this form of communication is suppressed.

Having said that, I agree people should wear what they like, just don't ask me to like it.

As long as Islamic women wear the burkha they'll have problems integrating fully into Western society. The other side of that is westerners will also have some excuse why they can't fully integrate with Muslim women.

This will take 50 years or so to right itself by natural causes as the burkha-wearing Muslim women will come round to our way of thinking.

Yes, why would I care what other people wear? People should be allowed to wear what they want, wherever they may be .. Suadia Arabia, Worthing, France ... wherever.

what if the government decided to ban wearing zip up fleece lined soft leather boots and colostomy bags? Your town would be straight down Strasbourg.

What about a T shirt saying "f*** off Muslims?"

How about when it impacts upon their ability to do their job, such as the case a couple of years ago of a teaching assistant who wore a burka, and whose students then could not see her mouth and therefore had problems understanding her (as I recall for many of them English wasn't a first language). Is it okay then?

Yes of course you can pick obscure cases to get your point across, and yes if students learning was being affected because of the Burka then she should not be teaching those people ... I'm sure she could have easily be reallocated to another class. But, on the whole, it doesn't affect or harm anyone.

Wearing a burkha doesn't incite violence; unless you are as thick as pig shit, that is.

I was referring to the numerous posts on here that link Burqa wearing with a hostile, isolationist attitude towards non Muslims. I dont think Burqas in and of themselves are likely to incite violence but I do think they promote division and foster suspicion.

Hopefully it is clear that I was using an extreme example in reply to the "people should be allowed to wear what they want" post.

Thats easy for you to say although I am willing to bet that neither you nor anyone you know has been taught by a woman in a Burqa so I don't think you can claim that its perfectly OK.

Whilst not directly harming children it could well be upsetting especially for the younger ones and especially when they are upset to have a figure completely covered in a black cape trying to comfort them and show compassion.
