EU To vote on banning ALL forms of pornography

You seem so reasonable most of the time, what gives?

I believe that pornography can be unhealthy, even dangerous. But the question is who regulates danger? I think it is the responsibility of individuals to live a healthy life, it is not the responsibility of the government to protect you from yourself.

You are responsible for the things you eat and drink, and you are responsible for the things you chose to read, watch and listen to, also.

With all the good intentions in the world, the government can not make people good or virtuous, and to attempt to do so by banning and mandating things is shortsighted. This approach does not encourage or foster a sense of personal responsibility, instead it just outsources it. Instead of the aim being to encourage responsibility, the aim becomes to encourage obedience. Not good.

/rant.

All very true, but great numbers of people just don't have the education or the self-control to look after themselves properly, or their families.

I live in a country that reportedly has one of the highest rates of rape and sexual abuse towards women in the world.

Most of this abuse is done by men/boys who do not have access to the internet. We also do not have pornographic tv channels.

That is to do with control, not sex.

I agree with a national firewall that blocks out porn but you have the right to opt out and have no firewall. I've got young kids and its just to easy for kids (especially boys) to watch some truly extreme pornography. It means at 11-15 yr olds think that the way sex is in porn, is the way it is in real life. Then they are surprised when a girl actually doesn't want DP in her arse. We learnt about a girls bits by looking at a stolen porno mag when I was at school. But that was it, and it was pretty tame, parade penthouse and the like. Just big tits mainly. But these days, kids are getting corrupted by online porn. So while the EU are going too far, I agree with a national firewall.

Not just 11-year-olds, but too many 5-year-olds have an unhealthy interest in online porn, apparently.

It'd be impossible. How would they go about banning it? Put censorship on a number of websites? I'm guessing there's hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of porn sites. Illegally downloading music still happens. It's impossible.

How can you be so sure? You are powerless to control what your child sees on other childrens phones & computers

unless you ban and effectivly ban all porn in all countries, you will still be powerless. a national firewall is similarly redundant because it will only block lots of things mis-flagged while being circumvented by those that want to. you can only enforce it within your own scope of influence and hope that other parents are similarly minded, and teach your kids its not very realistic or appropriate. (of course they may not actually mind engaging in DP and the like, they may have different views and attitudes on these matters like our parents and grandparents had).

Well, preferably the Roman-Catholic version of medieval Christianitas, but if that's
too much to ask (and it probably is today), I would be quite content with some sort
of modern version of it.

My point really is that there is only one form of Christianity, and that is the faith in Christ as preached in the New Testament, which has faith as it's core message, not cultural values and standards

The term 'Christianity' is now a cultural idiom.

What you are really saying is that society lacks moral value and standards.

We don't need to be Christians to believe that.

Banning internet porn would result in the quality of porn getting much better.
Who wants better quality porn?

It's the low budget, unedited stuff that most afficionados want....at least so it looks as "real" as possible and not simply actors going through the motions posing at the camera (which I hate).

We all like different things on this personal topic, and I hate anything "professional" with seasoned "actors"

I was installing some games on my 8 year old nephew's laptop last year and discovered something like 500+ bookmarks to hardcore porn videos hosted on the various free porn websites out there. I was quite shocked,tbh... Sure, we are all curious about sex growing up. My mates and I downloaded and shared lots of porn back in the dial-up days when we were 11-12, but I think there is something definitely wrong with little kids watching the graphic content that's freely available on the net. It's not right. Would you want your kids watching some coked up guy face f##king some bird? Probably not. I don't support this ban, but i know it's not right... consciously...and for society in general.

and where were your nephew's parents while he was looking at all this porn? It certainly isn't right that he's watching that stuff but its crap / non-existant parenting to blame not internet porn

It all comes down to how you define "pornography". I guess they'll want to set up a special committee that will spend all its time inspecting potentially pornographic material and certify it as fit or unfit for European consumption.

What about "stadium porn" ? Images of The Amex to be pixelated ?

You are correct, but it starts with taking responsibility. We are in this situation precisely because people have become accustomed to the government being "responsible" for them. This needs to be unlearned IMO.

5 live was hysterical today with their porn debate. They were talking to 'porn addicts' who visited porn sites 3 or 4 times a week.
I had to laugh.

After a while you get to know what the preliminaries and sequence of positions are before they do it.

What a load of patriarchal tosh that these people who support the ban spout. This idea that all porn is male-oriented and that all porn exploits women. Has anyone bothered to ask women what they think?

And where does gay porn sit in all this? Who does that exploit? Presumably lezzers doing it is okay? (Lipstick lezzers stuff, I mean. Not real lezzers doing it)
