You are correct, but it starts with taking responsibility. We are in this situation precisely because people have become accustomed to the government being "responsible" for them. This needs to be unlearned IMO.

I think it's the other way around. I think there are great numbers of people who will not or cannot take responsibility for their own actions.

Right, but I think that this is a result of a number of generations learning that the government is responsible not the individual.

The state tries to legislate in order to mold behavior to make people "better" people, but all it does is it takes that responsibility away from people. Eventually people no longer have the sense that they are responsible for themselves, they forget how to be, and they cannot teach their children how to be. This is the cycle I see us as being in and it's tragic to watch.
