Booked the edge of town Ibis Amstel hotel. It was £100's cheaper than in the centre and right on a tram route. Just done a check for Wednesday night and found a brew pub with TV screens 100 metres away. Job done. Oh, and the Heineken Experience is a block away. May not even make the game!

PS if the Brighton Fan Zone is anything like Marseille take your own bucket as toilets were non existant, a couple of food shops and a guy with two small speakers playing rubbish music that no one could hear.

PS if the Brighton Fan Zone is anything like Marseille take your own bucket as toilets were non existant, a couple of food shops and a guy with two small speakers playing rubbish music that no one could hear.

Sitting here at Schipol airport waiting for my flight, and can confirm/forewarn about the public toilet situation in Amsterdam. It is the only real “negative” of the city I found, in a beautiful city which has otherwise superb facilities.

The only public toilets are fee charging portacabins (which is fair enough) of which there are maybe four or five total in central Amsterdam. All four of these were out of order.

Thinking of going into a Starbucks/McDonalds for a slash? Forget it. Most of them don’t have toilets at all, and those that do charge €.70-€1.20 a go and are genuinely of below average cleanliness (in an otherwise extremely clean city).

Amusingly, there are signs up all over the city saying there is a €140 fine for peeing in public such as into the canals, which is extremely common because there are no toilets anywhere.

No idea what they do on match days, but even with 20 portaloos I think the toilet situation in Dam Square would be horrific.

I was using the toilet inside the Old Docks building. Probably a lot cleaner.

only go to satellite bar if I have gone to watch a game only to discover too late that the game is not being shown at the original bar I was heading to. (which, usually if I am on Leidseplein is Dan Murphys, or on Max Euwerplein is the Arun). My friends enjoy the ribs at satellite bar, as a veggie, I can't comment.

The unlimited ribs for around €15 were nice, the service and the place itself was not. Bit grim to be honest and horribly steep stairs. Dingy and dirty. Nice ribs. Don’t want to think about the kitchen.

Think you're wrong. Satellite bar is not known as the best sports bar , it's a hellhole!!

Loads of English and Irish pubs about showing footy. Oreilleys as someone said above is decent will be packed when Brighton play I suspect.

I agree on Satellite bar being a bit shit. I disagree on there being great options. It just isn’t that kind of place.

As I am travelling solo on this occasion, my son and fellow local seagulls are not able to make it,... I aim to drift around the hot spots, find a few likely bars outside the ring of tourist madness and tourist prices, and just enjoy the game with some locals.... eat well, drink well then drift back to the west country on Friday evening..... if I hook up with some Albion characters, all the better, if not ... I've never had a problem socialising with locals in my past travels.

Not for everyone, but circs this time have dictated a solo run....

if you're near the Heineken Experience, O'Donnell's on Marie Heinekenplein shows the footie. I haven't been in years, but 20 years ago it was the place I'd go the most. (probably because I lived around the corner)

Bear in mind, Amsterdam is small so lots of places are close. at the Ibis you are 10 mins walk to O'Donnels on Marie Heinekenplein, 15 to Rembrantplein, 20 to Leidseplein, and all of those become a lot shorter when you factor in trams.
You're hotel is on the edge of de Pijp, which was a cool little area when I lived there ... Since I left the average coolness may have risen.
(it is not always so with hotels, I sometimes ride past hotels that claim they are Amsterdam in the same way Luton airport claims it's London)

A popular wheeze over the world is hotels being creative with areas they claim to be located. The Holiday Inn in Slough claiming to be Windsor is a classic. Some AirBnB are the same. Friends in Canada once sent me links of London properties to give a once-over and opinion. One flat claiming to be 'close to famous Notting Hill' appeared nearer Wormwood Scrubs. Not even the same borough.

Going with my wife and grown up son. Staying just south of the stadium. Dont have a ticket but fancied a few days in Amsterdam. No idea where we are watching yet but happy for any ideas or for anyone to join us.

There is a caveat to "Amsterdam is small", Zuidoost and Noord are a bit of a pain.
Luckily there is pretty good Public Transport.

I am in that Hotel too.... there is a good bar round the corner in addition to that South African place,.. one of the reviews say it's good for watching big games... Huis van Iemand Anders.... Look it up,... I deffo plan to pay a visit.
