    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

It's funny, I actually re-signed up in 2021. I previously left NSC and abandoned my previous account because of how toxic this place was. It's actually worse now, so great news, I won't be posting anything further on this thread or any other. There comes a point at which expressing dissenting...

Which is exactly what I said would happen.

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Look, I would be the first to admit, I knew very little about Ukraine beyond the somewhat sketchy coup in 2014. I've only just started trying to understand what is going on in the last week or so, and it just seems to me that there are two narratives. The one before this war started, and the one...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Obviously it's awful, truely heartbreaking, and nothing I said was supportive of this war. I hate war, all war.

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

The BBC clearly knew of the problems in Ukraine in 2017, so it's hard to understand why the reporting is such a whitewash today. Ukraine is hardly a healthy democracy and bastion of freedom. I've heard people say we should be worried about Russia moving into western Europe, but I'd be more...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Apparently the Ukraine security services have shot and killed one of the Ukrainian peace negotiators (for treason apparently), Denis Kireev.

Yes the other implication of my comment is that the plan doesn't tell us that they don't intend to. But then, I never said that the map proves they don't intend to, just that it doesn't prove that they do. I hope this has now been cleared up.

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

No, the implication of my comment is that the plan doesn't tell us that they do intend to. If you can't understand the difference at this point, I can't help you. Sorry.

This is so twisted. You cannot tell from the map whether Russia intend to invade Moldova. Correct. The claim was that you can tell from the map that it will be invaded, and that the map is proof of that. But you can't, and it isn't, for the reasons I stated.

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Apparently this legislation was put forward by the some members of the LDPR. Apparently they have 21 / 450 seats in the State Duma. People should be a bit cautious about what they hear/read during a time like this.

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

You asked why I sounded defensive, and you accuse me of being a troll, so I guess you have both asked and answered your own question. I think it's best if we just end this conversation. Here is what was posted and I replied to: Here was my response: The caption on the picture was...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

That I was expecting a hostile response doesn't mean I was looking for one. In fact, the very things you questioned, my "defensiveness", was an effort to try to avoid a hostile response. I could just as easily ask you, are you suggesting that I am posting things with the aim of attracting a...

I guess I was just anticipating a hostile response to posting that.

Doesn't that red part of the map actually represent the region of Moldova called "Transnistria" which is a breakaway territory. I'm not arguing for the legitimacy of that breakaway region, only that the image doesn't represent a planned incursion into Moldova, but rather a reinforcing of a...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

I find it really uncomfortable to hear anyone not directly affected by war saying, from a position of saftey, that there shouldn't be any negotiation in an effort to bring peace.

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

I'm certainly not arguing that they had a right to invade. I'm asking what would be required to put an end to this peacefully, and would/should we be willing to give that a try?

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Well I think that is a valid point of view. But there is another valid point of view, which would involve putting these issues on the table as part of a negotiation. I don't know the answer to this question, but it is a question. If peace could be arrived at tomorrow, by acknowledging and...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

What I have been trying to get across is how I think Russians view this. When we went into Iraq and Afghanistan we were shown the humanitarian/security need to intervene, and the less horrific side of the consequences. I imagine Russians were shown the oil reserves and messages about...
