Yes, he is hardly going to be bringing Ronaldo and Bale, but it's the way he is quoted that was interesting if it was word for word. He seems very certain he is off.

I agree he knows he's off and that makes me feel that he know's where he is going. However, same applies to West Brom as it does for us regarding likelihood of getting Real players of any quality.

I want the guy at the club, albeit its a gamble. However, West Brom do concern me. They've gone for someone who's worked only as a coach before in Steve Clarke and it worked well initially. His brother also played there, which may have an influence.

If WBA are prepared to offer him the role then I think we'll need to be looking elsewhere. Seems as if we go through a very full process but the risk is that we don't tie something up quickly.

I agree that if WBA want him, he'll go there but that's a big if. The club has appointed a coach before, but a coach who had worked extensively in the PL. West Brom barely escaped relegation last season, it would be a bold gamble to commit to a manager who has never managed before and only has limited experience of PL football.

Doesn't the article also say that he's going to start a lower level to the one he's used to?

I think he'll also see they sacked Clarke at the first opportunity. He needs a smaller club, slightly less pressure. A little more time. A club that is far from relegation troubles, a club that should back him enough for a chance at the play offs.

Normally you'd think that given the choice of the two Albions in their current league positions, then it would be a complete no-brainer and we'd be looking elsewhere. But Paul Clement does seem to be a very well-grounded chap. There is a level of risk associated with entering management at struggling Premier League level. If it all goes wrong, then his career takes a massive step backwards and it could be quite a fight to get back to the top table again. Our Albion, on the other hand, would present a very good opportunity to work out of the spotlight and to really cut his teeth at a club expected to be competitive and with wonderful facilities. A stepping stone job? Undoubtedly - but if he does well, we do well.

(Note: I have absolutely no insider knowledge at all, I am merely speculating like everyone else)

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Bozza. As with much of football, there is a tendency to see this choice too simplistically. What 'noises' Clement has made thus far could be equally applied to both Albions. My gut feeling is that if a straight choice he'll plump for us for the reasons you've stated.

Agree entirely. I'd heard Malkay was a shoe-in for WBA previously.

On a slightly different tact, I don't understand why Steve Clarke hasn't had more mentions for us.

I agree with all this, but it all sounds strangely familiar. Substitute the name Oscar Garcia for Paul Clement and it raises the question: do we want another manager that sees us as a stepping-stone and will be off when next season ends? I was fully behind Oscar, but viewed him as a long-term project; in other words, his managerial skills would bear fruit not in his first season, but in his second and/or third. I view Clement in exactly the same light.

Because he went to WB on his first job and was sacked prematurely, and now his No. 1 CV doesn't read well. Precisely why Clement should come to us.

But will he? Given parachute payments, we have to be viewed as a long-term project. The question is: which manager can accept this and commit to a long haul? McLaren has done so at Derby. If Clement can, then all well and good but, if not, someone like Clarke or MacKay -- both of whom were sacked prematurely -- would be good alternatives.

I think the best thing to do is ask yourself if you were he where would you go?

We can compete on stadium, set up, facilities, location and ambition but perhaps are lacking in league position, players and salary.

We are expecting a lot from a young inexperienced manager WBA can pay him a premier league salary now and he can take over an existing set up and adapt it, we will need to bring in possibly 8 new players and he will have to start many things from scratch.

Probably the salary he's on now against what WBA and us are offering will be the decider.

West Brom were 3 points off relegation. That doesn't call for a gamble from the club, or to me sounds like a job for someone who want a little time in their new career.

Well it was fun while it lasted.

In a battle of the Albion's we just don't stand a chance.
Dress it up all you want, they are a Premier League team with all that entails.

We can say we're Premier League Ready all we want, and we are, in all but one aspect:-

MONEY

Lesser Albion have it, we don't.

There are 8+ teams in next years Premier League capable of failing greater than Lesser Albion.
Clement will back himself against those odds all day long.
From then on he's on the gravy-train.

Real Albion can't even offer top 6 spending.

You can have all the bells, whistles and shiny baubles you want, but money talks, and we're not even in the conversation.

'Lesser Albion'? You're either trying to wind up any Baggies that may glance at this thread or in serious need of a history lesson.

Sunday Supplement yesterday had most of the journalists in agreement that WBA insisting that they retain their current coaching set-up might put some prospective managers off. Pepe Mel had to work with a coaching resource he hadn't requested and didn't know. Consensus was that to attract Clement, they'd need to at least meet him half way and allow him to bring some of his own staff in. Resistance on this from WBA could be a deal breaker.

Really, what the hell do I know? We'll see what we'll see and unless it's Worzel Holloway who's appointed I'm sure we'll all get behind him.

If he goes to WBA good luck to him, but his only remit will be to keep them up and if he starts badly, we all know & he knows how that will end, and very quickly.
