Charlie to Sunderland (Merged)

I appreciate some of the posters on here are evidently mates with Oatway but that doesn't preclude others from offering opinions on him.

I have no idea what he's like as a coach, I just know that his idea of "banter" used to make me cringe, and his programme column was generally painfully unfunny. To me. Just a personal perspective.

Will be interesting to see how his personality translates with a bunch of footballers who've already done for a man as charismatic and famous as Di Canio.

That was a good post until you mentioned Di Canio and charismatic in the same sentence.

I just can't see it. I have absolutely no axe to grind against him/them, they were with us, they left, we've moved on. Nothing else matters to me, but looking at the team he's got to work with, they look very under-skilled at that level. When they played Liverpool (me wanting Pool to win) was most worried abot Craig Gardener, and if he's the best they've got, they're going to fall short whatever the manager does. They could spend in Jan, we'll see, but at the moment, I would have them in the group of relegation possibles along with Palace, maybe West Ham, possibly Fulham.

* note I say Palace not out of rivaly. But they also look woefully short at the mo, and I can't see them coming anything other than bottom.

West Ham won't go down.

I can't make my mind up whether i want Sunderland to stay up or go down. I would have lent towards down until i heard Oatway was to continue as one of his assistants. I'm not going to waste too much time thinking about it :lolol:

It doesn't mean I like the bloke. You can be charismatic without necessarily being nice.

I remember years ago working during one of the Labour Party conferences in Brighton. Tony Blair & entourage walked right past at one stage, and it was obvious that he had a certain amount of charisma, there was just something about him that other politicians don't automatically radiate. To be honest, I frequently found his manner of speaking (particularly that irritating little hesitation he used to insert into his speeches, as if he thought it added gravitas) annoying, cloying and verging on cringeworthy at times. And his politics are another matter entirely. But having seen him at work up close, I'd never deny he had charisma.

Same as Di Canio. He may well be a total arse, but he's got plenty of personality about him. That's all I was getting at.

My only grievance with them presently is that they are currently occupying Another Club's rightful place at the foot of the Premier League table, and that can never be a good thing.

Exactly this, and I also genuinely want Gus, Tanno and Charlie to succeed.

Even though it will feel a bit like seeing an ex girlfriend out on the town with another bloke !

Good luck to them all. They brought us some great times and if they return to the Amex I will be on my feet applauding.

So disappointed with how it all ended, but I choose to remember the good times.

I didn't think he had any personality either.

Charlie's out of his comfort zone here. Being based practically in Scotland and with a squad full of pissed off Italians, his cheeky Southerner antics may not be so well received. But I wish him well.

Not sure I will do that. I cannot get out of my mind that awful game against the other lot. Something went badly wrong that night and for me Mr Poyet & co still have a lot to answer for. Applaud ? Not for me just a stony silence.

I appreciate how bad you may have felt, but the fact is that he got us that close to a play off final - isn't that worthy of applause.

And let's look at the team he put out - Kuszczak, Calderon, Greer, Upson, Bridge, Bridcutt, Lopez, Hammond, Buckley, Ulloa, Orlandi. Hmmm. Not good enough to beat Palace. Is that team in need of any extra motivation? Shouldn't the motivation to get to the premiership be enough by the time the manager has got you to the threshold.

Are you aware that Charlie has his UEFA A badge? He only needs the Pro badge to progress further. He's not just the resident clown as many would like to believe.

Especially seeing as apparently he couldn't read or write not so long ago, Charlie has done well so fair play to him for making the most out of what he could..

Although I heard from a good source, but its not gospel, that he went round a young players house and confronted him after some banter went wrong in training, which was one reason he was let go, fu*ck knows, but like someone said on here, I would like to see them all do well, but also want Gus to get some comeuppance and bought down to earth haha

Even if Charlie isn't a great coach - he is great for team bonding and morale, which is possibly even more important than coaching anyway.

I suspect our training ground & dressing room is a lot less of a fun place to be now he's gone. Oscar and his team certainly don't seem like a laugh a minute!

especially when your in a relegation battle, it becomes just as much about morale and grit as well as skills.

What a patronising post. Severe dyslexia is no measure of someone's intelligence.
