I know a steward at the ground and at the last game of the season, 12:30pm ko, he arrived at 6-630am and said he would not be leaving until around 6-7pm. He is on approx. £10 an hour, the agency will add on prbably 20%, so £12 hour x 12 = £144 for one steward. As many have pointed out, there are hundreds of stewards so that is a lot of money on a match day.

According to the Argus the club are looking for voluntary redundancies (at least to start with). If true, then, unlike Mothers' do 'ave 'em, you can't say "I'm looking for voluneers - you, you and you".... about the most you can do is say, for example, "we're looking for 2 out of accounts, 3 out of marketing", or whatever...

Then you have to assess the volunteers (if any) and decide what you're going to do...

They won't get to the £1m saving by just a hands up redundancy of 18 x £15/20k junior staff who can take the money & run to a low ranking place elsewhere. Some big/bigger players will have been identified & TOLD they are being made VR

Easy money for most of that period. Only really busy for about 3 hours round the match.

Who said it would be junior staff? If you look earlier in the thread, I've said that the average salary is £40-45k and others have said that it could be one or two highly paid people and some lower paid staff. The only thing we know for sure (according to the Argus report) is that they are seeking £1m savings and 18 people - £55k TOTAL cost/employee.

Oh, the club have apparently confirmed to the Argus (in the same article) that all staff members are eligible to apply for voluntary redundancy except playing staff.

We have been saying for ages that the AMEX is overstaffed. Ken Brown ****ed up big time in the early stages. You used to drive to the AMEX on a non match day and be greeted by 20 stewards. No stadium in the country has that. Barber realised this early on and got rid of a lot of that meet and greet crap on a non match day, he is now obviously dealing with some of the slush that is less visible to us. Just hope he doesn't cull the ticket staff because they are credit to the club with the way they smooth the ticket purchasing process.

Spot on!

Well yes, I understand what you are saying but I drive to away grounds all over the country and I have never experienced the level of draconian parking restrictions that there are at the Amex. Everywhere else you go you can park within a reasonable walking distance of the ground. I have to say that the transport infrastructure around the Amex is woeful and I'm sure that, if they could have built it again, they would have recognised and improved this problem.

I also visit grounds all over the country and getting away from most of them takes an hour or so on average so to single out The Amex is plain lazy.

You should try getting to and from your place-especially if you are a Brighton fan. It is beyond abysmal.

Because you are unable to park right outside The Amex does not make the transport infrastructure 'woeful'. Have you tried going to Reading? West Ham? Charlton? any other London club? All fecking abysmal to get to and away from. The Amex infrastructure means that you walk 200 metres to the station and with crowds of over 25,000 for every game that means you are going to have to wait to get on a train-it isn't rocket science is it? Same for the Park and Ride buses-everybody cannot get on the first few buses so there will some waiting involved. Away fans have a 50 metre walk to get on the Park n Ride (apart from you lot who can't be relied on to act normal so you need to be escorted away). No stadium in the world can disperse a 25,000-30,000 crowd without there being a wait for most people. Even getting away from Selhurst is difficult for the 12-15,000 you have been getting during your good run. To say The Amex is any more difficult to get to and from than any other 25-30,000 attendance is, frankly, bollox.

Finally Paul Barber is clearing up the mess he inherited from Ken Brown. A bulge of middle management excised at a stroke to save the club about £1M a year with their job responsibilities spread amongst those left or devolved to lower management. Who is next ? The staffing levels of stewards and security will have come under severe scrutiny , is there an over reliance on agency workers ? Surely it is cheaper to employ a steward on say £10 an hour than a steward to be paid £10 an hour by an agency who then invoice the club at £15 an hour to cover overheads ?

The reason why there are so many stewards is linked to the safety certificate and ongoing work at the Amex last season.

In order to satisfy the safety officer, the club had to employ more stewards than they felt necessary. This season, because there has been a lot of construction work during the season, there has had to be extra security and stewarding for H&S reasons.

Now that the club have proven to the authorities that the running of the Amex is both professional and reliable from a transport and H&S perspective the council are prepared to reduce the number of stewards from next season.

It won't make a mammoth difference to the accounts though. 50 stewards x £15 an hour x 6 hour shift x 25 matches = a saving of £112,500.

What about Harley? Must be on 200k per year.

Good point. I just seems wrong that supporters are being bled dry and staff are losing their jobs all so we can allow very average players to live a life of luxury beyond their wildest dreams.

Is there scope to lose 100 stewards ?

If we are really trying to save money and are really pushed I can see Luke Williams being named Manager in the next few days. Might be a bit "tongue in cheek" but stranger things have happened. :)

I am getting fed up with all the increases here and there if this answers your question.

Genuine question. Would you be happy to have ambitions of (say) finishing 14th in this division next season, or pay a bit more and go for the play-offs?
