Really struggling with motivation to get out these days. Mainly due to wet weather to be fair. So I finally pulled the trigger on some Zondas last night and a sram force breakset as well to go on the best bike. I remember you bought some B&M front lights before the monsoon season started. Would you mind reminding me which one you went for and penning a few notes as to whether it has performed in the wet weather??

I've not ridden in the dark & wee-wee rain ... yet, so although it's got wet sadly all I can really say is it's moist proof!!

I also recommend this, on initially switching it on i was underwhelmed because it is not out and out powerfull like a torch or focused beam like most lights.
But use it on dark country lanes it is superb. The beam pattern and smooth even light makes it easy for the eyes to focus. It is very much like a car headlight on low beam. The run time on full is very good, i put in a better set of rechargables than what came with it.
And importantly is very reliable and i have been out in very heavy rain with it over the whole of last winter.

The first line in the above would stop me from from saying they'd be just as good off road.
Chances are they would be, I think they are brilliant when on a road with absolutely no other light.
But they are good because they light up the whole road, instead of 'spotlighting' where you are going.
I've been over 40mph on a pitch black descent without any issue.

Being over critical, I'd say it doesn't 'impose' itself on the road surface when it's a really well lit road into plenty of on coming traffic, but that isn't a problem it's a really well lit road.
Because it needs to comply with German laws it is basically a car headlamp.

I think the 80 lux photo is pushing it a bit.
But my light is certainly equivalent to the 70 lux photo.

The light runs like that for over 4 hours, which is massive when compared to others on their brightest settings.

It's not a pocket torch, it's the width of my hand with the circumference of my thumb to second finger.


I think it's great, extremely good value of money, and will definitely be buying another as and when, assuming that's not any time soon.

Mud everywhere

These really bright lights can be a flipping nuisance to cyclist coming in the opposite direction, I found out yesterday. I've got a Cree power light (cheap) and they have to be pointed right down if mounted on the handlebars. Not needed if there are street lights. Very good and essential if they are out. Disadvantageous if the oncoming driver is blinded and they cannot judge the distance of the cyclist or speed when a very bright light is on.

Seems to be some kind of activity at the banked area of Preston Park velodrome this morning. Look's like they might be laying astroturf on it? Surely not? Anybody know what the outcome was on the H&S issues that suddenly deemed it to be unsafe? At least they don't seem to be demolishing it, which is good news.

After hypothetical conversations with Colin and Phil, last night I a plotted route roughly circumnavigating West Sussex.
(It was very easy on www.plotaroute.com)

The route is 152 miles with 7756ft of climbing.


Much to my surprise they are both keen on the idea, so it looks like I might have found my '16 target.

It's definitely one for the summer, when we don't have to worry about it getting dark.

It'll need finessing, I had the Gov map on one tab and plot on the next.
For obvious reasons I always insist we hold our breath when crossing into East Sussex, Surrey and especially Hampshire.
So if we do get round to the ride, I'll need to make sure we're on the correct side of the border, more often than not.
