ZZZZZ how are injuries his fault?

Bridcutt started his career as a left back, so he can play their comfortably.

I don't believe I suggested that the injuries are Gus's fault, however as manager he has to ensure we have suficient back-up in case of injuries.

OK, so we can play Bridcutt at LB, Hammond at CB, Calderon at RB (in a worse case scenario) which might just leave us a little light in midfield. And three out of five defenders playing out of position.

Not good. And avoidable.

Whilst I agree Gus wont take us any further than this Division, suggesting Curbishley is as laughable as people suggesting Hoddle when the new manager discussion comes up. I mean, they are absolute dinosaurs, neither have done anything in league management for years.

Also letting Elphick and Cook go was Gus's decision, neither were good enough in the long term but it may have been useful to keep one of them whilst gettnig rid of a few of our mediocre central midfielders. Hall left of his own volition. He was never going to sign a new contract when he heard Spurs were interested, particularly after we naffed him about earlier in his career. You can't level that one at Gus.

How do you stop a player wanting to go and play week in and week out? Bournemouth offered regular football to Cook & Elphick on 3 year contracts, so it would take a very mean spirited manager to prevent them earning a living their own way by forcing them on the bench week in and week out, probably causing resentment into the bargain.

So, we have as starters:

Bruno
Greer
El Abd
Bridge

with non-playing back up options of:

Calderon
Dunk
Painter

And apparent further (midfield changing) options of

Bridcutt
Orlandi
Hammond

10 players for 4 spots, and people are upset that we didn't keep a further 3 or 4?

This sort of injury/suspension list in one area of the field is not so common that it's worth keeping lots of spares around. It's a burden on the wage structure and on the morale of the squad for those that see no way in other than lots of injuries to team mates.

I'm not the manager, it's up to Gus to manage the squad and make sure we have adequate cover, he should have tried selling one and talling the other he'll get his chance, like now- maybe he did but we will never know. It hasn't helped loaning our Vincelot either, he could have covered LB and Painter could have played CB with Greer, or the other way round, and Calderon at RB. We're basically back to having a League 1 defence OK but again that's down to Gus not ensuring we had adequate cover, not shipping out some of our midfield dross (Harley and Sparrow particularly, and we should have let Vicente go. I mean, come on- trying to build a squad around a player who has been injured for the best part of 4 years) to free up wages to allow adequate cover. I know its not as simple as that but having two 'fit' defenders available after selling and loaning 3 adequate backups in the Summer doesn't reflect particualrly well.

Having 11 midfielders, only 6 of which have made a meaningful contrbution this season is a burden on the wage structure!!!!

Are you suggesting that having 7 first team defenders as well as the versatile midfielders isn't sufficient back up for 4 places?? Having FIVE unavailable for one game is an exceptional circumstance - I'm sure all teams in the Championship would struggle.

Midfield is also where you need more of a variety of players (defensive/attacking, speed, creativity, strenghth, etc) whereas defenders are more homogeneous. Get midfielders with variety, and an ability to slot in to defence as needed and you have a much more versatile squad than if you switch out some midfielders for back up to the back up defenders.

How many of our defenders would you be comfortable seeing step up into midfield? Bruno I would, I'm not sure about Bridge - Ashley Cole struggles when asked to play further up the pitch as do a lot of british players when asked to play out of position, I don't think I've seen bridge play a midfield role, Calderon could, but I don't think Greer, Cook, Elphick or Dunk could, I've seen El Abd try and it wasn't great, Hall is young enough to give it a try but would you want an inexperienced defender attempting to play midfield?

Also, to put it into numbers, we often play five in midfield. So that's 2.2 for every midfield spot, and some of them offer cover in defence. With our squad we have 2.5 players for every defensive spot and people are arguing it should be 3.25!

It was until January so presumably classed as a short term loan?
BBC Sport - Gillingham sign Brightons Romain Vincelot on loan

Anything over 4 months is classed as long term to give the loaning club some stability and guarantee that a player they thought would be available to them long term won't be snatched away again, he can't be recalled.

Having loaned him out its not as if Gus has shown any confidence in him anyway.

Re. Acker's point above, we loaned out our most versatile midfielder so where is the sense in that, maybe we should have kept him and got rid of/loaned a couple of our more limited midfielders.

If it's a long term loan he's only available to recall in the Summer transfer window.

It's not a long term loan deal, it happened outside of the transfer window so can only be for a maximum of 93 days under the emergency loan window rules. We can re-call him after 28 days, the 28th day was 22/11/2012 so we could re-call him.

Fair enough, wasn't sure when the deal happened. It would seem doubtful that we'd recall him though with Poyet having already loaned him out and therefore showing he has little confidence in him.

I gave you the exact date and also a link to the loan article on post 28 & 33.

It all seems rather moot considering the likelihood of Poyet recalling him. I expect we'll just get on with it, maybe Sampayo will get a chance. He looked ok in the one cup game he played, against Wrexham I think.
