Interesting to see two points of view going here, it's getting to be a very polarised club. Its splitting towards the "Lets respect the opposition and show some class" ( except Palace and Leeds, of course ) or " Lets hurl dog's abuse at anyone who has made the mistake of supporting a club other than the Albion".( besides it's football and I've paid good money to abuse people )

Each to their own.

Personally, I thought it was a friendly and it should be treated as such. Show up, enjoy the game, hope to see some goals, and preferably not see your team play long ball and lose. It was, mostly, a good evening. But fantastic to be back at the Amex.

Not quite as these were just youngsters who were obviously over here for studies. There were a couple of numpties who were escorted out of the north stand by stewards for giving it large. There were some amusing chants but there were abusive one too.
As someone who has been lucky enough to travel to Portugal and Spain in recent years on preseason tours, I can say that Brighton fans haven't had any problems with opposition fans. The only ones who made any noise at all, were the French when we played PSG, and that was supporting their team, not goading the English.

If you sing your own songs loud and proud you do more damage to the opposing fans than any pathetic moronic abuse. It's all about respect. Unfortunately there are a large number (not only in the North Stand) who don't know the meaning of it.

Idiotic.

The large bulk of the language school kids were Italian, not even Spanish. And earlier in the game had been chanting "Seagulls, Seagulls" along with everyone else.

They were there, spending their money on tickets, food, merchandise etc.

Certainly not necessary for them to be targets of wanker signs, swearing chants etc just 'cos the football was boring in the second half.

But still, you stay classy North Stand.

Exactly it is FOOTBALL.

It's to enjoy, which fortunately most do. It's just a pity that the majority have to endure the ranting of a few.

Banter is fine, especially when it's funny. I especially liked the "who's that w***er in the white" at the Wolves match. But this appeared to be against a group of fans, many of them youngsters, who had travelled 1,100 miles to support their team in a friendly match against what they had been led to believe were a class club.

Last season the palace chant had all but died out, at non palace games. Now palace have gone, to get thrashed by the likes of MU, lets forget about them and enjoy our club.

I seriously doubt that those chanting "stand up", remember, or were even born, when Venables and Mullery were the managers and the confrontational events which followed the first round of the 1977 FA Cup. The second replay at Stamford Bridge was the final straw for Brighton supporters when the ref made a horrendous decision in the 78th minute giving palace the match.

Banter yes, but aggressive behaviour? These events were 37 years ago, perhaps this year is a good time to move on.

I think there is a difference between directing chants at an away end and at a couple of hundred teenage foreign students sat in the North Stand.

Would have liked to see the same people act like that had they been 200 hardcore Villarreal fans sat there and not some baffled 14-year-old Italians.

Interesting point. I didn't see/hear any of the abuse from where I was sitting in WSL, but it sounds as though the moron element of Albion fans just don't know when to stop. Much, if not all of it alcohol driven no doubt.

Banter is fun and part of football and it should not be removed if you want an atmosphere. I'm all for swearing and feeling the emotion of football.

Guess the discussion point is defining what is banter and when it crosses the line. For me it's when the aggressive undertones kick in, then it's just (normally unnecessary) abuse and inciting trouble.

In my opinion only an idiot would call shouting abuse at a bunch of kids in a friendly match "banter". Football is a different game to the 80's, and the violence aspect is as prehistoric as the monkey chants.

Still, compared to periods past when those same students would no doubt have been physically attacked, I'm sure a few special ones singing daft songs and posturing isn't going to bother them too much, nor harm our reputation. The collective embarrassment of decent fans is usually disproportionate to the feelings of the abused in these situations. I'd imagine most of them left thinking "great stadium, decent bunch apart from a few knobs, good night out", or whatever the Italian/Spanish is for that.

That truely is embarrassing, imagine explaining to your mates/Family/colleagues that you got thrown out of a pre season friendly match, for abusing a group of language students. As I pointed out earlier, they were not even SPANISH students. Most were Italian. And, having sat relatively near them in the first half, they were JOINING IN with chants of "Seagulls, Seagulls," etc.

One lad cheekily started a chant of "Italia, Italia" and it seemed they were suddently therefore an open target to a bunch of Brighton nobs in replica shirts who were bored of the second half and needed a distraction.
