Normally when a political party wins control of a council they've previously had serving councillors who know the ropes of how things work. We now have a situation where there are 10 councils who will now be run by a new party whose councillors have next to zero council experience.

What could possibly go wrong?

Indeed, and I'm going large on Popcorn shares.

Yes you're right. Reform smashed Labour today, there is no getting away with it, we need to ask why? My answer is poor leadership from a heartless man Keir Starmer.
l'd ask why a vote for local council elections on local issues would increase for a party who's central policy is purely immigration which is a central government issue. I assume less foreigners would mean improved bus services and more bin collections?

2024 election Labour and Starmer one word was ‘change’.
One word. That word gave him a huge paper thin majority to do whatever he wants in next 4 years.
The ‘thick’ electorate voted him in.
The ‘thick’ electorate will vote him out.
Such a sneering and arrogant view of the working class in this country.
What an awful generalisation about working class people. They are not all daft enough to be sucked in by a tweed draped fraud.

I expect we will see the usual correlation between Reform support and low immigrant numbers in the area.

Exactly this. Floods of reports of candidates saying they weren’t into politics 2 months ago plunged into running and now find themselves as councillors with zero experience. Blind voting by the public puts them in positions they didn’t want as they just wanted to draw attention to a party to support being the official opposition. Chaos awaits for local government in the face of reorganisation, interesting(?) times

If things go wrong they will blame it on the Establishment and the Deep State.

If? The fact is the govt inherited an absolute shitshow and have laid down an early marker which why might have not been popular as it needed time which obviously the public have voted against with their feet. Farage has exploited the unpopular start to a labour govt and now finds himself in an extraordinary position effectively ousting the established Tory party with absolutely no experience. It’ll be interesting to see how these successful candidates fair……

What's the verdict on Farage's work as the Clacton MP?

I speak as a local govt officer for a northern lower tier council (accepting this is only my opinion). His plan to be grow the vote has succeeded exponentially, but I fear many coerced candidates will wake up in the morning fearing wtf have they done. For the hours you need to put in the allowances aren’t that great!

I am told that Farage is very skilled in making the most of those allowances though.

Perhaps he can run workshops?

Falmer, soon...
Local councillor is a beast of a job if you want to do it well and really represent the community. Given the energy, commitment and visibility of the local lib dem councillors we have, there would be little chance of any change. I think Reform have made a mistake here. They should have kept their powder dry for the general elections. Now there are a number of years in which they'll be under major scrutiny and some of the shit will stick

I wonder what the chances are of Farage being our next PM. I would wager significantly higher than NSC collective wisdom would suggest.

You guys voted for Brexit, I not counting anything out.

The question for me is if anyone will be prepared to explain why they voted for them.

I suspect reluctance is based on genuine concern and a subliminal desire not to contemplate such an awful scenario.....

Another sunrise and @bazbha who wanted to debate the issues won’t do so, @stoo82! won’t pick up the slack for him and @n1 gull can only chuck around one word insults last heard on the terraces 10 years ago.

Anyone want to have a go at explaining Andrea Jenkins policy speech? Anyone?
