Murray: Contract update (sort of!)

And of course he'd take that rather than an offer of a fixed (and higher) salary from another club at the end of the season? Top strategy chippy!

Look further than your nose, you offer a salary and a pay as you score. Similar to Mushy at Sussex. Could cost a fortune but at least you get results if it does.

I find some of the criticism of Murray quite ridiculous, I can only presume that his detractors have no idea about the game.

Does he really have many detractors though? I had a few people have a go at me ("do you watch games?" "yes", "that makes your opinion worse") earlier in the season when I gave my opinion that Glenn hadn't been at the top of his game recently as a reason why he'd been dropped. I was of the opinion that at his best he was brilliant, but he was pretty inconsistant. It seems that view is shared by Gus/Taricco judging by recent coments from them (see website today for what Taricco says! Although perhaps if that make me a detractor it makes Gus and Taricco detractors too.. they need to learn a thing or two!

Never going to happen when he could pick up a higher wage elsewhere and not have to worry about long term injuries or new managment coming in and not playing him etc

It's a massive risk. Poyet believes holding off contract talks will get the best out of Murray, by having to prove himself in order to earn a new deal. In doing so he believes that Murray can possibly become the 20 goal a season striker that we need to fire us up to the Championship. It's a big risk but if it gets the best out of Glenn and brings us Championship football, it's a risk worth taking

Reading Tano's comments on the official site, it sounds like Murray/his agent want more money that we're prepared to give at the moment, but IF he can prove he's the 20 goal a season striker then we'll meet his demands.

It's nice that Gus is squeezing Murray gently. You want the big bucks? Then show up every week and become more consistent and you will be worth your increased contract! Otherwise, do one! It seems the message is clear to me.

The problem with holding off contract talks is that now it is January and, presuming the club have not got a contract on the table, Murray is entitled to talk to other clubs which, if his agent is worth his salt, he will be doing on Murray's behalf. Seems a dangerous game to me that Gus is playing. Murray could be playing out of his skin to earn a contract here and at the same time putting himself in the shop window for other clubs!

An offer should be put to Murray soon. Leaving contract negotiations to the last minute or till a contract actually runs out is something you can get away with with the like of Hart or Mayo but not arguably the best player at the club.
I`m sure it will be resolved in the coming week or so and that performance yesterday might just get Muzzer a few hundred extra a week. When he plays like he has in the last 2 games there is no better striker in this division and Poyet knows that he would need 600k+ to get anyone in to compare with Glen.

He can not speak to other clubs in England (legitimately) but could to talk to clubs abroad.

Think the role Wood is playing in Murray's recent run of form has been overlooked. Barnes and Murray - Murray does all the creating. Wood and Murray - Wood takes the pressure off Murray allowing him to get in more goalscoring positions.

Murray has always been quality but this recent run is the best I've seen him play and hopefully it will continue. Easily a championship player (remember the Villa game when he dominated 2 premiership centre backs) and hopefully gets a new contract.

make the step up to the Championship with no difficulty at all not so sure the championship is about speed has Murry got it only time will tell but one way or another the club needs to either sign him or sell him as he will walk for free in 5 months

You make a good point. Everyone needs to feel wanted. It worries me that Gus didn't seem to even shake Murray's hand when he came off yesterday but it was hugs all round for Chris Wood? Bizarre.

Maybe Murray finds hugs a bit gay given the fact that he's a Northerner, and has already warned Gus not to hug and kiss him when he's substituted?

Are you sure? How would the EU view a restriction on talking to English clubs as opposed to French or Dutch for example?

Muzza is our best striker... we must NOT mess him about... just make the offer, with a clause with higher reward if we go up... saying we are going to extend Wood's loan is a mistake, IMHO... Barnes complements Muzza (our key striker), much better than Wood... also, the fact that it looks like we are extending Wood's loan presumably means we are not bring in the 'special striker', so possibly bad news...
