Brighton boss Gus Poyet has challenged Glen Murray to score 20 goals to get himself a new deal. Poyet 'he needs to get there, we work during the week to give the strikers chances. They cannot complain about the number of chances they are getting'

Poyet 'we have agreed with his agent to wait a little bit more and see what the player wants as well. I'm not going to say what i'm going to do but Glenn is in a great position. His contract is finishing, he is a striker, he is playing and scoring goals'

Yes he is - but he may have been replaced already? Personally I doubt that we'd briung in a good striker only to release our current best striker, but odd things happen in footy!

If Gus feels that he can get a better player than Murray, or that Murray is not worth an improved contract, he is sadly deluded on the evidence of what I have seen this season. He is a delightly skillful, intelligent player with bags of potential in my view and would make the step up to the Championship with no difficulty at all. You can be sure that most of our rivals would bite our hands off to sign him if given the chance. Let's hope it doesn't come to this because, if it does, we'll regret it - I've no doubt of that.

from what i have seen of him this season, escpically again the SCC he is playing the best football of his career and the longer gus leaves it the i can see him leaving, which would be a great loss as i am sure he wont be out of place in the championship

And of course he'd take that rather than an offer of a fixed (and higher) salary from another club at the end of the season? Top strategy chippy!

If that was all that we were prepared to offer, he'd rightly tell us to piss off. But a good 2/3 year deal with bonus payments tied to the number of goals he scores - now you're talking.

You make a good point. Everyone needs to feel wanted. It worries me that Gus didn't seem to even shake Murray's hand when he came off yesterday but it was hugs all round for Chris Wood? Bizarre.

One of the top three players at the club, and he's been a good player since he arrived here barring one or two barron spells in front of goal. He's a championship player, IMO. In fact, I reckon I've seen worse playing for smaller Premiership clubs.

Spot on. His hold up play is second to none, he holds the ball up better than any of the 7ft lumps (Odejayi, Showumni, Alan Lee, I could go on) in this division, yet has a cracking goalscoring record to go with it. The pressure he takes off our defence at times is superb, to have an outlet that can win you free kicks, penaltys, or just to hold the ball up for a supporting player to get forward.
I cant see him being easily replaced for under £1m with the fee's going round for Maclean, Austin, Le Fondre and so on. In fact, i'd say he's more important to our promotion push than having someone like Austin in our side, because the service wouldnt be there.

If we go up, then Gus has the rest of the season to decide whether Murray is a striker who will make it in the Championship (I personally think he would). Glenn would be mad to leave us if we go up so I don't think there is much risk of losing him in that case.

The biggest risk is if he performs well for the rest of the season but we narrowly miss out on promotion - a Championship side could tempt him away. Glenn is happy & I can't see that he will want to leave in January & ruin the chance he has of hitting at least 20 goals in a season by unsettling himself.

Although the club obviously needs to be run as a business, we could comfortably take the risk of losing him for free in the summer (but keeping him for our promotion push) knowing that we could splash the cash on a replacement if he did choose to leave. I'd say it's worth the risk rather than selling him now & attempting to replace him mid-season.

Please note, this was in a newspaper, hardly the horse's mouth is it ? Personally I'm now fairly convinced that we wil not sign a new striker but may well extend Wood's loan until the end of the season.

I said as much last week, but there aren't three better strikers in this division than Glenn Murray.

He now has 10 and we are not even half way through the season - so, in theory, he is on course to be a 20 goal a season striker and strikers of this ilk are valuable. Yes, he's had his ups and downs but what striker doesn't during the course of the season?

I agree that the Championship is the bigger picture but I would see Murray having a key role to play rather than being surplus to requirements if we go up. He is a long, long way from being just a good League 1 player.
