The problem with holding off contract talks is that now it is January and, presuming the club have not got a contract on the table, Murray is entitled to talk to other clubs which, if his agent is worth his salt, he will be doing on Murray's behalf. Seems a dangerous game to me that Gus is playing. Murray could be playing out of his skin to earn a contract here and at the same time putting himself in the shop window for other clubs!

spot on.Is it a coincidence that murray has hit his best form of the season as the transfer window opens.
if a player that poyet had signed scored a hatrick yesterday im sure he would have got more than just a
pat on the back.
As an outsider looking in it dosent look like murray is poyets biggest fan.

Muzza is our best striker... we must NOT mess him about... just make the offer, with a clause with higher reward if we go up... saying we are going to extend Wood's loan is a mistake, IMHO... Barnes complements Muzza (our key striker), much better than Wood... also, the fact that it looks like we are extending Wood's loan presumably means we are not bring in the 'special striker', so possibly bad news...

Agreed. Esp the bit about puttibg a better contract on the table if we go up - Even more incentive!

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
I thought from the innumerable threads and posts over the past two years that everyone thought he was lazy/not interested/homesick/wanting to go back north/disrespectful of fans (whatever that means)/continually caught offside etc etc etc. Suddenly he gets a few goals and he's the second coming - can you make up your minds? It's a bit confusing for those of us who have to rely on this site for opinions/prejudices.

Personally I've always thought he was quite good - at this level at least - in the very few times I've seen him (although he was shocking last year away at Tranmere).

He's been shocking as many times as he's been good:)

He is a good L1 striker, as such he is inconsistent, hence the on/off praise from posters... however, he is our best striker, and we need to look after him... it will cost a shed load to replace him...

He will do better and go from strength to strength in the remainder of the season. With Wood providing the support he can score more, as he has shown by scoring 5 in his last three games with wood

Funny, on the text after the game yesterday, Gus said Murray was the happiest he had been at the Albion. Let's face it, we don't know what is going on behind the scenes and to be honest, I think it's better that way. Sorry if my message is fixtures, but I haven't read the rest of the thread.

If that was all that we were prepared to offer, he'd rightly tell us to piss off. But a good 2/3 year deal with bonus payments tied to the number of goals he scores - now you're talking.

Think you'll find that most teams at all levels offer incentives to their strikers for goals scored, then collectively team bonuses for wins etc....Hope we can retain him he seems to have hit form (at contract time) and together with "the special one" can give us that final push. I've got to say though if we could polish Ashley Barnes finishing I think we have the perfect partner already. He gets into and creates space, but he isnt quite the finished article. I'm sure Gus and his team are working on this at the moment

I'd agree of course, but I'm particularly interested to here sir albion's view on the matter. Le Fondre will go because some idiot will pay over the odds for him, despite the fact that Chris Holroyd was his equal in the short time he spend tearing up division 4 defenders this season.

Murray's game is, and always has been, about so much more than simply putting the ball in the onion bag.

That is a very concise answer and spot on !

Do you think a specialist coach like an old striker working with him would help. Or would be getting too heavily laden with coaches
