This seems to have gone cold - was there anything to it, or was it just a rumour?

Shame if it was - think it would have been a good move all round.

We seem to be struggling to move players on.

Personally I quite the combination of the two in the squad. We have a flair young attacking exciting player, and an older head who is a solid dependable player but not exciting. It gives us two different options to counter different scenarios during the season. Keeping Montoya also frees up Alzate to play in the centre more.

We've got Veltman to do that now - almost certainly ahead of Montoya in the pecking order

Not really much movement anywhere at the moment post Covid. Not sure clubs want to splash to much cash without knowing what will happen ref crowds ect going forwards. Think there maybe a flurry towards the end of the window and maybe a lot of loans with obligations to buy next summer attached to deals.

Not loads of business being done anywhere at the moment. There will be a glut of activity, probably from next week onwards

Very perceptive Martin :)

Don't know about Martin's situation obviously, but as others have said, it seems like a hard market to shift players out. Lots of clubs wanting reduce the salary burden so keen to move players off their books, but of course with others doing the same, they're unwilling to take on more salaries, whatever the purchase price. So they are putting pressure on potential new players to take a hit on salary, which understandably (although we know wages have been artificially inflated beyond a reasonable level) they are reluctant to do.

This could be causing the impasse: clubs wanting to sell/buy but players prepared to sit on their existing agreements rather than take a cut. We'll see a reducion in the average salary across the board because out of contract players will fill the demand if in-demand players don't flex. Some will be effectively forced to take a lower package and the market will correct. But that will be slow to happen, no one wants to blink first. So my guess is we will see a lot of activity late in the window as players/clubs start to get nervous.

Caveat: the are obviously exceptions to this - the highly in demand individuals, for whatever reason (extreme skills, huge potential, difficult to fill positions etc). But these highly visible transactions could mask what I've observed above.

There will be a lot of loans with salaries being shared/offset. All the talk of big transfer fees is just that - talk. Clubs have lost and will lose millions in the coming months and very few are in a position to spunk xxx millions on transfer fee and player wages. United can't afford Sancho and Raiola has had to climb back into his ****ing box over Pogba; Bale is a professional golfer and Ozil might as well be. The Gravy train has hit the buffers.

Not for the likes of Pogba, Bale and Ozil it hasn't!

No, of course not - but it's slowing down. If those three get a 'next' contract anywhere it'll be nothing like what they're on at the moment. They know it and more importantly their agents know it too. That's why Pogba's still at United after being a complete **** for the past year. Raiola makes a big announcement that Pogba will be staying at United. Of course he is because when the super (****) agent tried to hawk him round the Covid infested world of global football - he found the numbers on the table comparatively frightening.

What you are suggesting, would be a sensible and proportionate response to this crisis, but I don't agree that it will happen. There will be plenty of big money deals. Oligarchs and Saudi Prince's are very well insulated from the current crisis. Premier League TV money will continue to drive debt induced purchase. The sheer terror of relegation to the Championship with reduced matchday revenue will keep those PL chairmen's wallets open, including ours.

There will be a (very) few headline deals. But the football market generally will be subject to downward cost pressure. Traditional TV money is not going to fuel growth - Sky and most other traditional linear platforms globally have lost billions in subscription and Ad revenue. The big unknown is what Amazon does with the proprietary data they now have regarding live football and streaming services. The WTO confirmed Saudi state sponsored piracy of Premier League content will not sit pretty with Amazon either.

It will be interesting to see who attempts to spend their way out of trouble and if anyone acepts the long term viability is to drop a division . . . a number crunchers dream.

Lot of championship clubs quoting astronomical prices. PL clubs who hold their nerve will pay much lower prices a week before window closes. Patience will be a virtue in this window.
