Just doing his job, however strongly we disagree with him. You don't have to buy the programme, you don't buy the Mail if you hate right-wing, middle England rhetoric do you?

When you buy the programme you do not expect this sort of ill reasearched crap

He comes across as something of a knob, really. Although his book was fairly amusing, nothing he has written since has made for anything but painful reading. I don't normally bother, but that tripe last night really was a load of unadulterated ARSE.

who the hell does he think he is?

A fan of the Albion like you and I, Dave? With strong opinions?

Oddly enough, I've had this debate before in recent times. Our fan base at London Irish has changed in 8 years from a 4K average to 11k average and there has been some differences of opinion within the LI ranks between those who jealously guard our heritage and traditions and the newer fans intent on making history and traditions of their own. In that debate, I'm very much on the side of the conservatives :lolol: so I know where people are coming from and agree to a greater and lesser extent with that approach. I just think you can't shout down the newer fans, it has to be a debate among equals with none of this "I'm a real fan, you're a bad fan" silliness.

I stand by what I said 100 per cent. There are some on here having a go at him because of who he is (a recent fan with a prominent position at the club/media profile) rather than what he said. That doesn't mean I said that was your motivation - but you should be careful of the company you keep in this anti-Ward fest :)

Fair enough if that's what you really think then who am I to slate it, its your opinion but clearly I do not agree.
I dislike Wards writing style, I dislike his lack of football knowledge, I dislike the way he suggests I am at fault for feeling antipathy towards Palace, I dislike the way he suggests its ok to feel this way about Reading because he does. And I particularly dislike the way I wasted good hard earned cash on his fee, and also on his book which was the worst book I have ever read and that is not an exaggeration. I threw it in the bin the second I finished it (which is something I never do with books) as it had wasted my time.
My football club is dear to me and I do not appreciate club sponsored spokespeople lecturing down to me about how I am belittling my club.

As for the company I keep, thanks for your concern but I'm a big boy now. :)

I really dont think it is a "new fan" "old fan" stuff.

I am sure you know plenty of fans who objected to what he put...reading here there are new fans and old fans who object.

BTW I am glad you put conservative with a small C or I was going to have to send you some Engels to read and renew your socialist vows
:lolol: :lolol:

..........and don't forget if you are a (ex) supporter of a Prem club, you will really have no experience of a cauldron of local rivalry.

Onyl a small % of spurs fans (1000 odd) will go to Highbury and vice-versa. This is generally the same for most rivalries/derby's.

The exceptions it seems have been the west midlands ones, but that is probably due to most of these sides recent emergence from Div 1 up to the prem.

For a while away fans in the north -east were not even allowed to go to the so called Derby game.

LC::albion: and not a Palace friend in sight.

Write a piece countering the argument and submit it, if you feel that strongly. I'd steer clear of calling Ward a 'cock' or other perjorative adjectives if you want it published though!

I think, in the main, the club are in tune with our feelings on matters like this (indeed, most matters). The programme is an expression of the contributors' opinions, as well as an official organ. You may get some joy, if you write something to educate the man in the error of his ways, if it's in a reasonable tone.

I'm sure I read somewhere in one of Tim Carder's books that Reading were our real rivals in the 50s of whatever, way before that 70s thing with Palace came about. Maybe Ward just wants to take us back to our previous traditions? :lolol: :lolol:

The Palace rivalry is a difficult one for a newcomer to understand. It's very much a product of the 70's and 80's and it's hard for someone who's supported the club for 5 years to get into all that.

I'm 25 and have supported the club since about the age of 6. In all that time i've seen us play Palace in the league 4 times. The gap between the first and the second game was 13 years. Yeah I joined in with all the chanting about Palace, sang about how much I hated them, but to be honest it's kind of difficult to loath something with a passion when you never really see it. I guess I did develop a dislike of them but it took a fair amount of work. I only really knew 2 Palace fans at school and though we would swap insults about our teams, without any actual games between the two it always felt a little forced.

I found a load of old copies of Scars and Stripes round my parents house yesterday. Flicking through some of them I noticed that in one edition was an article calling on us to drop our rivalry with Palace. This must have been about '98 when the gap between our two teams was about as wide as it'll ever be. The writer talked about how long it had been since the two of us met and how it seemed pathetic to chant about a club that our younger support had never seen us play. It's also interesting to read the old Gulls Eye editions that TGC has on his site. Read the end of the season one and you will find NO mention at all about our 3-1 home victory over Palace. It's not mentioned once as a highlight of the season as far as I could see. There's only a brief mention of the 5 penalties game, and this was when the rivalry should have been at it's height! I do wonder whether our enforced absence from our rivals has made us push a bit too hard and protest too much about how much we hate them?

For me that dark day in October 2002 reignited the rivalry. The shame and humiliation of that day made our victory last month so good. If Palace had won 1-0 in 2002 would it have meant so much to beat them in 2005 by the same margin? I think we needed that pain to get the show back on the road.

I'll leave you with this thought. When we move into Falmer we're going to have to find a lot of new supporters and I guess most of them our going to be "ex-Premiership" ones who won't understand the nuances of being an Albion fan. I think we're going to find a few more Mike Ward's going to Albion games in the future.
