Closures happen, accept them and move on.

Why dredge out coal when you can buy it cheaper abroad ?

Stick to Service Industries - mind you they are moving to Mumbai now :lolol:

Economics is difficult to grasp.

It really depends on Thatcher where you were work wise etc.

I got lucky and managed to stay employed and moved others weren't so lucky.

Her politics were certainly very geographic as to whether you had success.

Not Luton! Thank God
She crushed the unions which IMHO is a good thing. Look at France where the unions rule and Tax is high. Unemployment is over 10% and unemplopyment in under 26 year olds is at 36% for men and 40% for women.

She wasn't all good though. Can't really claim to be a woman of the people.

Destroyed Britain's Coal Mining industry.

Ditto Steel, Shipbuilding, Car manufacturing, infact she despised anybody who semed to actually 'make' something, except Sir Clive Sinclair.

Sold off all the social housing in the country, now there's none left, so if you can't afford to buy your own house now & have to stay living with your parents you know who to blame.

Cut student grants to almost nothing ( Blair has just continued where she left off ).

Made a few people in the city very rich thanks to selling off nationalised industries at a knock down price.

Yeah, she stole my free milk as well.

This mining thing is a strange old thing. everyone up in arms about miners losing their jobs but I have not seen many marches about thousands of jobs going in the financial services industry ???

Not so left wing friendly I suppose.

It's got nothing to do with being "left wing friendly". The mining industry was a nationalised industry that one woman almost singlehandedly destroyed, with communities built around it and generations of people for whom mining was a way of life. The financial services industry, on the other hand, is a private sector based mainly on ripping people off...mortgage lenders are hardly likely to generate huge amounts of goodwill, are they?

Yes but it is cheap open cast coal that is causing MASSIVE environmental damage, not to mention the exploitation of a cheap labour force with poor working conditions.

Hmmmmm, social concience, I think not.

I've ticked the love box (ooh, er!) but love is too strong.

I admired may of her qualities and disliked some others. Her main legacy was of smashing the unions and the extreme left wing who had brought the country to it's knees in the 70's. She showed strong, almost tyrannical leadership at a time when our country most needed it and single handedly changed the face of British politics.

The Falklands came at a handy time for her but she didn't take any shit and was a formidable opponent at home & abroad.

On the down side, she created a divided Britain and encouraged Corporate greed. The Poll Tax was pure madness and I'm sure there are other cock ups which I've forgotten.

At the time she came to power in 79, Britain was in a complete mess and at the crossroads politically. It could have chosen the Scargill/Hatton/ Red Robbo/TUC,etc disastrous route, which would have seen Burgess Hill twinned with Minsk, or Thatch. I think it chose the right one.
