It's pretty damn obvious that socially distancing and wearing a mask is the best protection where disparate groups of people mix for short periods inside . So, buses, trains, the tube, shops etc..it's pretty straightforward surely? We have had 18 months of this now and all the science points towards airborne infection is the way it spreads.

I shouldn't have to explain it

I didnt ask you to explain it...

I asked you - how long would you keep them in place given covid isn’t going anywhere.

Given cases are going up with mask/SD what other restrictions would you bring back and how long for

Buses/trains/etc have said they are keeping masks.

behind the sensationalist headlines, there is a (relatively) long running scheme for critical infrastructure worker to not isolate but test daily and have restricted contact at work, self-isolate away from work, applies to trains, energy companies etc. its arguable that PM is sufficiently critical, could do their work from home, its not a unique situation just for Downing st.
I bet Javid wished he had thought of this scheme? Mind you he's still new to government again and he's probably not up to speed with how Johnson and his cronies twist and break the rules according to their needs.

There might still just be a scintila of the honest son of a Bus driver who worked hard to get where he is today, still in him.

Animal Farm anyone? "All Animals are equal..."

Given that for months the people demanding lockdown end right away were saying it should be done so the NHS could treat non-COVID ailments I’m intrigued to hear how the NHS is able to do this when swamped by a fourth wave of hospitalisation.

Ferguson’ predictions - and associated scaremongering- have been utterly wrong time and again. Appears to be an attention-seeking gobshite. Wouldn’t be so bad if he presented a balanced view of the range of potential outcomes his modelling predicts, but he shouts about the worst case scenario every time.

We’re still 90% down on peak hospitalisations.

In addition to the flu hypocrisy the laughable thing is millions of the people shatting themselves about never getting on with living with covid also eat mass processed food, drink loads of alcohol, and don’t do enough exercise which causes hundreds of thousands of people to die of cancer every year.

The only reason every one is still crapping it is the never ending media fear porn and mass infatuation with giving every scientist under the sun a mouth piece to have their five mins of fame and let this nonsense continue. Like you say thousands die of flu every year and no one ever notices because it’s not in the news. That’s how pathetically gullible and manipulated the masses have become.

If vaccines massively reduce hospitalisation and death, all vulnerable people have had their jabs now, it’s young people catching it but shown that they are almost no risk then what logic suggests we don’t get on with life? Anyway, unfortunately the herd have proven that are utterly idiotic and we are where we are. We’ll be conned into another lock down in Autumn, masses will lap it up whilst still queuing up for their annual doses of medicine, big pharma will get richer, freedom is never coming back, the biggest economic shock in living memory just around the corner as the money printing machines go brrrr until the whole system is bust beyond repair.

I am speaking as a vulnerable person who has a compromisd immune system (cancer but not caused by lifestyle ) which will reduce the efficiency of a vaccination and is much more likely to suffer a serious case of Covid. Personally I am not too worried about people going to pubs, clubs etc.. I don’t expect to have as full a life as a healthy person. I am concerned about staff in those sectors and would want to see them having some safety measures in place but also want them to have employment and it has been heartbreaking to see so many small businesses close.
However, whilst rates remain as high as they are I would like to see some safe environments maintained for people like me, and there are millions of us; like transport and essential shops so that we are not prisoners at home and can still work, feed ourselves and be economically active. It really isn’t much to ask that people are required to experience the mild amount of inconvenience of wearing a mask for a short time in these places to give us a life.

This is it in a nutshell - there is no real hardship in maintaining modest restrictions (masks in confined spaces etc) that potentially have an impact on keeping everyone safe. Anyone with compromised immunity (I have a close family member who does) can (as most do now) take some responsibility for measures to improve their own safety. Just requires a bit of thought and consideration on all sides.

i suspect Javid is a more conscientious and savvy politician, chose not to use the scheme.

I'd keep masks and social distancing until it's under control, oh, and there is no obligation to wear a mask come Monday so there will be chaos and mass spreading of the Johnson variant.. Just the 54,000 new cases yesterday.

Cases are going up with those things in place, the position you are taking doesn’t make sense without wanting to go backward a few steps

Chaos? people that wouldn’t wear masks what ever won’t wear masks and the majority of people will have to as mandated on public transport or work.

Are other counties calling it by their leaders name?

Just one of the intolerable few posters on both sides who find it hard to have a conversation about anything without politicising it.

Enjoy your 'freedom' folks because restrictions will be back with a vengeance by early Autumn according to the new projections.
