Google releases new versions of Android, yes. However it is an unfortunate aspect of life in Android-land that you may be at the mercy of your handset manufacturer and/or your network supplier as to when you get the update, if you get it at all. Many people may be only few months into an 18 or 24 month contract but find they will not receive any newer versions of Android thereby leaving them lacking the lates features and security updates.

I believe the most recent statistics show that 7 months into the newest version of Android, called Ice Cream Sandwich, only 7% of devices have been updated. This means 93% of devices are running one of the older versions of Android. This is another reason the platform remains a firm second best for man developers.

Can you please update your oft repeated facts.

You would expect iPhone sales to start falling away a bit now as most people should be aware that new iPhone is not very far away now. And you can guarantee that the next new iPhone will be the fastest selling phone ever. Again.

All those who bought iPhone 4, who didn't bother with the 4s, due to it looking the same, will be coming to the end of their 2 year contracts and be primed to upgrade, especially given the next new iPhone will have a different form factor with bigger screen etc.

Are there any indications of what new features the new iphone will bring?

Not officially, but 4" screen is the main difference expected. The dock connector is likely to change also which could render useless about a zillion existing devices which use the current dock connector.

Surprised it's taken so long to get the screen to a decent size. The connector change will piss a lot of people off (or maybe not as they seem to love giving Apple money!), unless the adaptor they produce is nice and cheap.

Are new features usually leaked in advance, or are they able to be kept quiet until the launch?

This is Apple If it's less than £39.99 I'll be amazed. It will piss a LOT of people off who've spent good money on speakers etc - who wants to have separate devices for their iPod & iPhone?!

I love Apple's products, but the prices for accessories are absolutely outrageous.

A couple of months ago I took a punt on the HTC One X having had iphones for 4 years and its a great device but I have to be honest I am considering chopping it in when the new iPhone is released and buying one of them. My experience of Android is it is good but there are too many quirky bugs and dependancies. For example I installed an app which screwed my data connection up so had to uninstall it before I can get online. That wouldn't happen on an iphone.

That said the Android OS has some great features missing in iOS but to be honest I miss the familiarity of the iPhone.

I've still got my 3S - I was in contract when they brought the 4 out and thought I'd skip the 4S and wait for the 5. That was MONTHS ago and I am still waiting but hopefully not for too much longer!

I dont see the 4S that much better than the 4, I am eligible for a new upgrade now and have been for a while but im holding out for the 5, don't think it will be long away and I think the mobile phone shops and networks know that, hence the good deals appearing on the 4S. Hopefully the iphone 5 is more advance. When comparing the 4S to the 4 I didn't think it was worth renewing a 24 month contract.

Apple are so popular and manufacture the best selling smart Phone for a reason. The iPhone is a fantastic device. You are pretty much guaranteed to be happy with your purchase if you get an iPhone, the only thing that may irritate is the regular updated models that are released usually once a year.

I haven't had much experience of of Android phones myself, but my girlfriend has a Samsung something or the other, and she is always having little problems. She is waiting for her contract to expire so she can upgrade to iPhone.

Even those updates are rare, compared to manufacturers like HTC and Samsung which seem to crap out a new flagship phone every quarter. I have an HTC sensation, it initially was brilliant, responsive, quick, easy to use, but much like a windows computer does over time, things have gotten much worse. The phone is now slow at most actions, I am constantly experiencing technical issues. Cannot wait for this contract to end so I can get back to owning a reliable phone, I miss my 3GS to no end.

You must have too much porn saved on yours then, as 1 year on, my Sensation still works as quickly and brilliantly as it did out the box!
