So why was he cautioned for accessing a child porn site ?

He was cautioned for attempting to access a child porn site. Subtle difference. He didn't access it in the end. He says in the book that he put his credit card information in, then cancelled it upon reflection 30 seconds later before it was cleared. At the time, what he was doing wasn't a crime (not that that is much of defence).

If he hadn't accepted the caution (i.e. the investigation continued), he would have been cleared of any charges, as no evidence was offered. Instead of having it hang over him for months or even years while the investigation went on, he accepted the caution.

It's been a while since I read the book, and for someone who wrote such great songs and essays, it's a pretty poorly-written book.

Yes. The political views wouldn't bother me so much (depending on the severity of the views obviously).

David Bowie comes to mind *Taps Nose*

It's a tough one, both my girlfriend and I like Lostprophets but haven't really listened to them since as it just seems...I don't know...tarnished?

As a point of interest, what do we think the chances are of the other members of the band possibly suing him for projected loss of earnings? As they've gone from a popular band with regular airtime/concerts to being effectively non-existent, based solely upon his actions, they'd surely be justified?

Was a massive LostProphets fan, saw them in Southampton a couple of years ago.

Never listened to them since the news broke early this year / last year or whenever it was. As much as I still like their songs, because I use Spotify, I can't give them any more of my money.

Hope the other guys in the group go on to something else succesful, feel so bad for them being associated with such a cretin.

No offence, but IMO that's a feeble acceptance of a lame excuse, biased massively by your affection for The Who.

If you'd read exactly the same facts in a newspaper about a random other middle-aged man, I daresay your take on it would be entirely different.

Of course no evidence was offered - there was no trial, because he ACCEPTED THE CAUTION.

Ah, thanks for telling me what I'm thinking.

He accepted the caution of attempting to access a child porn site.

Other posters have said that he is a kiddie fiddler and downloaded kiddie porn. The thread title asks about 'if your favourite singer committed child abuse', and your first response mentioned The Who, and therefore an allusion to Pete Townshend.

He could have faced further charges of accessing child pornography or be accused of kiddie-fiddling, but no evidence was offered on that.

So you have evidence to the contrary? Do tell. Is there something you wish to tell us that you know that the police and CPS don't?

Or are you going to go down the utterly meaningless line of 'no smoke without fire...'?

Answering the original question most certainly. All manner of things inform how you receive and perceive art and crimes and political views will certainly affect how I hear music...... even songs I have long cherished. If Bruce Springsteen was convicted of child abuse then the line "Hey little girl is your daddy home" in I'm on Fire will suddenly sound very very different for example.

Personally I have a bit of difficultly listening to Frank Turner now he has declared himself a liberatarian.

Al I think I've told you this before but I knew someone who worked for the CPS during the Townsend case and was very involved in it. She told me that he was extremely lucky to get away with a caution after the evidence shed seen. She was still very angry about it long after the event.

Tricky one this. The genius function on my iPod just played me Last Summer. It still is a great song, but tarnished now.

The photo that they've used on the BBC - looks like the arrest mug shot - makes Watkins look really dodgy: beard, slicked back greying hair and sinister looking eyes.

That's because he is seriously dodgy. I hope that he never sees the light of day again.

As for the original question, yes, it would put me off their music.

If I stopped appreciating art because of a perceived flaw in the creator that would rule out any number of great artists. No Chinatown, for example (Roman Polanski), no Thriller or Off The Wall (Michael Jackson). I am not that keen on fox hunting but I am still listening to Roxy Music. Having read Townsend's autobiography, his explanation does seem plausible to me and I believe the charities supporting victims of child abuse were set up years before the incident and not as a response. As The Big One writes though, it is a dull book when compared with say Keith Richards, Neil Young, or Nile Rodgers. The only thing they have in common is the industrial amounts of drugs and alcohol consumed.
