I don't remember many people singing 'Simply the Best' when we won the County Championship

it's like suggesting that england rugby supporters ditch "swing low sweet chariot"...anyone can just pick a good rocky record and put that on for the team to run out to...we are different...we don't need to do that rubbish...we have history on our side and that is something that money can't buy.

however, a new version of GOSBTS that is a bit rockier and modern maybe an idea as the old one does make me cringe a bit sometimes.

For years, we've come onto the pitch to 'Pigbag' ... Da Da Da Da HOOPS' ... and we play it when we score, as you well know :lolol:. It works for us.

But the problem is that Middlesborough started using it ... no singing, they just stand there clapping their hands in time to it. Add to that, Palace have started using it when Johnson scores ... 'Da Da Da Da Andy Johnson'. So it's not really ours.

Good Old Sussex By The Sea is unique. You're the only professional football club in the county ... it truly is your song, no-one elses.

Keep it.

And on the "B" side:

All we are saying
Ev'rybody's talking about
Ministers, Excuses, Planning and Councillors,
And not doing anything at all
All we are saying is give us a ground
All we are saying is give us a ground

Let me tell you now
Ev'rybody's talking about
Planning Rules, Conservation, Regulations,
And not doing anything at all
Come on the Albion
All we are saying is give us a ground
All we are saying is give us a ground

Oh Let’s stick to it

Dick Knight,
Mark McGhee,
Michel Kuipers
Adam Virgo
Kerry Mayo
Danny Cullip
Guy Butters
Richard Carpenter
Charlie Oatway
Paul Watson
Gary Hart
Leon Knight
Steve Claridge
Paul Harding

Come on the Albion
All we are saying is give us a ground
All we are saying is give us a ground

He suggested having "Right Here Right Now" instead. Anyone know the words? ???

Also, was he at Upton Park on Saturday? How many times did the anthem get sung by 2,700 Albion fans who think it is a f*ckin great song/chant (me clearly being one of them).

It is utterly inconceivable that we would run out to any other tune. When we are Falmer, it will sound better with a better sound system anyway.

Was he not West Ham? Uninspiring? It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end when the whole away end sang it.

Also he can piss of suggesting we need gimics etc at withdean. The reason people do not sing has nothing to do with the music played beforehand or the lack of cheerleaders.

I think this is a better rendition of the tune.

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/chalcraft/sussex_by_the_sea.mp3

Now just to improve the Norman Wisdom words:

I got as far as the chorus (I am a wordsmith but not a musician, or at least I find it difficult to put words to music):

Chorus:

"So if you see us playing,
Whoever you may be,
You can tell them all we'll stand or fall,
For Sussex by the Sea!"

Credits to Curious Orange for finding this.

Based on the principle that most successful songs are really mundane and it best if they are easy to remember (and you can get by with humming along if you don't know the words):

We're the team from Sussex,
Sussex by the Sea.
We are going up and we'll win the Cup
For Sussex by the Sea

Chorus:
"So if you see us playing,
Whoever you may be,
You can tell them all we'll stand or fall,
For Sussex by the Sea!"

Brighton is blue
And Albion is white
Play up the lads
With all your might

(Not much better than Norman Wisdom''s by jove)

Then it is messing about with the words until it sounds right.

Blue is the colour of Brighton
??????
???????? Albion (rhymes with Brighton)
???????

I would would go for four lines cause it is easier to remember, with at least two rhyming which helps as well.

Over to the musicians and proper songwriters.

Spot on. I think the build up to the game and the stream of 70's punk/crap in embarrassing (speaking as one who was there in the 70's too). The build up is un-inspiring. The players trot out to a reception similar to a county league game. And Atilla/other bloke trying to lead singing of "we want Falmer..." in cringe making.....

There's no reason to dump GOSBTS but it does need updating. Ever heard it played live by a really good silver/brass band? Now that is inspiring.

How about a new mix?

I remember going to Highbury a few years ago and their build up to the teams coming out was so professional - I hate fecking Arsenal but I was impressed. By the team they came out the crowd were at fever pitch.

I think overall the point AN is making is valid.
:nono:

agreed .. think we could upbeat GOSBTS to sound louder etc and having heard the dances of wolves that sunderland come out to very good in my opinion..,,but i think it all has to do with the arena we play in.. Given a new covered stadium and a decent pa system with Gosbts blaring out it will be great ...
All naylor is doing is trying to fill a few spare column inchs and provoke a reaction .

I was reading the program at Crewe and Kerry Local Lad Mayo seemed to be implying that GOSBTS was not as inspiring as whatever it was they were listening to in the dressing room before they came out. I think it has it's place but it's also a bit antiquated.

I'd play "You're not from Brighton" by Fatboy to make the lads feel superior over the opposition, or my all time favourite 'going out' record - wrote for luck by the Happy Mondays. That would get the blood pumping.

Highbury, 1983 FA Cup semi final. Metropolitan Police band (or something similar) played GOSBTS with one copper singing it. One of the most magical moments of one of the top days of watching the Albion since 1966. Still brings tears to the eyes 20 years later.

Blasphemy. It is inspiring.

I've edited this to include my email

It is different. Any old club can have a pop record with which to run onto the pitch.
It is ours and no-one elses.

People have it played at their weddings and funerals.
For exiles (which I was for 33 years) it makes the heartstrings tug.

Never never ditch Sussex by the Sea. It is inspiring, in fact it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up

Yorkie. Top post. It even got the hairs standing on the back of my neck when I was having a walk round Chelwood Gate the day after the Swindon home leg and the band played it at lunch at Lord's. Naylor is clearly trying to stir. I think the team did come out to Praise You for a while two or three seasons back. I hated that.

Didn't David Bellotti once try and get rid of it? I think he was trying to get one of the usual cliched b*llocks running-out tunes played, like The Best.

Fans voted to keep SBTS I'm sure.

As I said on the other thread I don't give a shit what Naylor says, he's a Stoke fan. I do, however, care very much what my fellow supporters think. Dave, once and for all, the stuff I play is all chart based and much of it bang up to date: Ash, Green Day, Libertines, The Darkness, Dandy Warhols, Blink 182 to name a few.
I'm never going to play dumb commercial pop pap. I'm proud of the fact that we are different at BHAFC. Comments, here and to my face, indicate to me that that the majority of the people who are interested in the music like what I play. I do it for love, I enjoy it very much and I simply do not believe the majority of our fans want the Albion to be like every other dumbass club with S Club bloody 7, a stupid mascot, 'wacky' presenting style and all the rest of it. If I really thought they did, I would love and support the Albion as much as ever but I would hand over the pre match DJ role to some awful local commercial radio DJ (and make bloody sure that Robina and I arrived 3 mins before kick off!)

On the question of Sussex By The Sea, we have recorded a new, very upbeat singalong ska version as part of the sessions for 'Tom Hark' and I will play it on Saturday. If people like it, we'll play it again. Hope you do!
