As has been pointed out, he's just trying to get a reaction so he can file another nothing article, after the success (for him) of his piece last monday, which gave him cause to put a postscript in the Sports Argus.

The idea of ditching everthing that makes our club unique for Britney and Busted before the kick-off is hardly likely to generate a frenzied atmosphere - it's not the song, it's the stadium. Anyone who was at Cardiff will recall that GOSBTS can get people going when sung by a large crowd. All that tripe that the Premiership puts on would cost us more money and take the club further away from the fans. Don't rise to the silly bait.

MoH/TLO - you're missing the point. Nothing wrong with "our" song. But the build is distinctly Div 3/4 or whatever it's called these days. We need to move on. I'm sure Attila and Samrah do a good job but it still reminds me of gloomier times. We've got a successful team with the best manager we have ever had (IMHO) - all we need is a decent stadium but in the meantime we need to move on.

That's your opinion, fair enough. But move on to what? "Simply The Best" by Tina Turner? Or how about "Let Me Entertain You" by Robbie Williams? Or how about some gangsta rap - Danny Cullip running out with a ball under his arm while a gloomy American mumbles on about how large his gun is?

Neither SBTS or hearing music that is more John Peel than Bruno Brooks remind me of "gloomier times" at all. It reminds me that our club and town are unique.

That has nothing to do with the point MoH made. We came out to GOSBTS when we were in the top division. His point - which I agree with - was about abandoning part our history for the sake of a falsified corporate atmosphere. We as a club actually have our own song (albeit shared with other local sporting institutions).

It's a bit like having your own top-notch privately owned restaurant, and selling out to McDonalds.

Found the words and an MP3 of a Brassband playing Sussex By The Sea. Note the line "Let our hearts be gay" LOL.

I was always told that you had to know where you had been before you could know where you are going. GOSBTS is the link between our past and our future. Our heritage and long may it live.

You've gotta be broad-minded, Ditch the Tesco bag shirts for broader striped shirts, but don't ditch the stripes altogether.

Same with Sussex-by-the Sea. If some musician can come up with a better version, and some songwriter can make less corny lyrics, it would be a challenge, without spoiling the essence (whatever that means) of the original.

I think it would likely to be a folk musician that corporate synthesised commisioned or just some plain crappy seagull alternative.

I expect it will be average crappy and we end up in the ditch instead of Naylor.

OK-I see where you're coming from.

First of all we dump the stripes in favour of your abortion of a shirt design?

Then: We change the music and lyrics of GOSBTS and call it GOSBTS Extended Mix and still pretend that it's our song?

How does "Good Old Pende By The Sea " sound?

Keep taking the medication Percy.:shootself

Less corny lyrics. What the feck are you on about. Those are lyrics that was supposed to inspire a man before he walked into a battle where he would probably be blown to pieces...please explain how that is corny?

It would take a lot of inspiration and technique and perspiration to improve on the Albion football rendition song (I was referring to the Albion lyrics being a bit corny):

Now is the time for marching,
Now let your hearts be gay,
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way.
So let your voices ring my boys,
And take the time from me,
And I'll sing you a song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea!

For Sussex by the Sea !
Oh Sussex, Sussex by the Sea !
Good old Sussex by the Sea !
You may tell them all that we stand or fall,
For Sussex by the Sea

We're the men from Sussex,
Sussex by the Sea.
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful men are we;
And when you go to Sussex,
Whoever you may be,
You may tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea!

(chorus)

Up in the morning early,
Start at the break of day;
March till the evening shadows
Tell us it's time to stay.
We're always moving on my boys,
So take the time from me,
And sing this song as we march along, Of Sussex by the Sea.

(chorus)

Sometimes your feet are weary
Sometimes the way is long,
Sometimes the day is dreary,
Sometimes the world goes wrong;
But if you let your voices ring,
Your care will fly away,
So we'll sing a song as we march along, Of Sussex by the Sea.

(chorus)

Light is the love of a soldier,
That's what the ladies say,
Lightly he goes a wooing,
Lightly he rides away.
In love and war we always are
As fair as fair can be,
And a soldier boy is a lady's joy In Sussex by the Sea!

(chorus)

Far o'er the seas we wander,
Wide thro' the world we roam;
Far from the kind hearts yonder,
Far from our dear old home;
But ne'er shall we forget my boys,
And true we'll ever be
To the girls so kind that we left behind
In Sussex by the Sea

Sussex by the Sea was written by the musician, composer and songwriter
William Ward-Higgs in 1907, while he was living at Hollywood House in South
Bersted, near Bognor, West Sussex. Ward-Higgs's grave is in Bersted
churchyard. As well as being adopted by the Albion, it was also the official
song of the Royal Sussex army regiment (see below).

One of the first times an Albion version of the song may have been heard was
at Brighton station in 1911 when fans welcomed the team back from a memorable
FA Cup win at Leeds. According to Tim Carder and Roger Harris's book Seagulls
(see books), the players were greeted off the train by thousands of
supporters singing:

Good old Brighton by the sea
Good old Brighton by the sea
You can tell them all
They can play football
In Brighton by the Sea

In 1914, Sussex by the Sea was adopted as the Regimental song for the Royal
Sussex Regiment. It became strongly associated with the club as the troops
were billetted at the Goldstone Ground before being sent to fight in the
First World War.The song was no doubt heard on numerous occasions whilst the
troops were encamped at the ground, and therefore became attached to the
football club. It has also retained its military links, despite the Royal
Sussex Regiment having amalglamated with other local corps to form the Home
Counties Battalion in 1958, which became the 1st-4th Battalion Queen's
Regiment eight years later. The song can still apparently be heard on
regimental days of the 3rd Battalion Queen's Regiment, who are the direct
descendants of the orginal Sussex outfit. It has also been adopted as a
county anthem, being traditionally played, for example, at the Sussex Bonfire
Societies' November 5th celebrations in Lewes.

PS: can't we have a background "Sussex by the Sea" (without the words) when we log on to NSC?

Norman Wisdom's legacy to the Albion:

http://www3.mistral.co.uk/timc/bhasongs/club.htm

Good old Sussex by the sea
Good old Sussex by the sea
For we're going up and we'll win the Cup
For Sussex by the sea
ALL TOGETHER NOW
Good old Sussex by the sea
Good old Sussex by the sea
For we're going up and we'll win the Cup
For Sussex by the sea
BRIGHTON! [clap clap clap]
BRIGHTON!

(Sung to the chorus of "Sussex by the Sea". The tune itself has been widely regarded as the club anthem for many, many years and is greatly prized by most supporters despite occasional attempts by the club to drop it, most notably in 1980 when Mike Bamber briefly had the team run out to the theme from the film "Rocky". Sussex is the county in which Brighton and Hove are situated and the club draws support from all parts of it. The words below were sung by a crowd gathered at Brighton Central Station in January 1911 to greet the Albion side that had just won at Leeds City in the F.A. Cup.)

Good old Brighton by the sea
Good old Brighton by the sea
You can tell them all they can play football
At good old Brighton by the sea

(The lyrics below were written to the whole tune by director and comedian Norman Wisdom in February 1965 and sung at the Goldstone at half time against Chesterfield that month.)

We're the team from Sussex
Sussex by the sea
Eleven players and a crowd who roar them to victory
So shout you fans and make 'em score (Goal!)
Clap your hands until they're sore [clap clap clap]
'Cause we're going up and we'll win the Cup
For Albion by the shore

We're the team from Brighton
Hove, by Jove, that's us
We're always fair, we never swear, but now it's hit or bust!!
So shout you fans and make 'em score (Goal!)
Clap your hands until they're sore [clap clap clap]
'Cause we're going up and we'll win the Cup
For Albion by the shore

Perseus, just to correct a point of fact, Ward-Higgs is not buried in Bersted, nor even in Sussex. He died in Roehampton in 1936 and was cremated in Norwood - Palace territory...

Good point Gilliver. You cannot believe everything you read on the Internet.

And the other chorus is better.

Norman Wisdom's version sounded old hat in 1965. It could be improved?

Just find a wordsmith and musician who can strum out a new song on the same tune that is a bit more withit.

God I f***ing love Sussex by the Sea.

I marched to it once during the Lord Mayors Parade in London years ago. My chest swelled with pride!

As a kid in Lewes on Bonfire night I used to love it when the band marched down the Cliffe & all the crowds sang the words.

Mostly though, it will forever remind me of the team running out at the Goldstone.

Naylor will never understand this, so lets hope Dick Knight ignores all his crap & one day we'll watch the team run out at Falmer to "Good old Sussex by the Sea!"

Actually I think we should sing `And you can tell them all that we'll stand and fall....`instead of `and we're going up to win the cup`. Either way though, I wouldn't rule out a stronger, more militaristic version of GOSBTS - a re-recording by a brass band - but drop it - NEVER.

My house
Heard Sussex by the Sea on TV during the Lord Mayor's show before leaving home for West Ham. It gave me a feeling that something special was about to happen. The anthem is ours - it belongs to the people of Sussex. It is these people who watch the Albion. It is these people who process on Bonfire nights across our county. It was those people who sang it on the way to war. It is our tradition and heritage. These things cannot be changed from above - the only way it will change is if the people of Sussex want it to change.

By the way, the last verse is going on my gravestone to be preserved for ever.

Sussex and proud.

I love the tune to GOSBTS but the truth is unless people here had posted them I would not know the words. I rather suspect that is true of many others too.

I still think the build up to the start of the game at Withdean by the club is amateur hour stuff.
