before you all go off on one...read the article.

he was in certain areas right!

He mentioned that there are 6000 people in the stands and not all of them like Atilla's choice of "music"......."when you have a crowd of 6000 people representing a broad section of the population, you need to play songs which the vast majority can readily identify with rather than a selection of personal favourites A meledy of up-tempo mainstream chart sounds combined with some old favourites would surely be more appropriate"

He mentioned that the way we do things at Withdean is amateurish compared to other teams. ....paul Samrah should stand on the pitch to announce the team not stuck away in a little box..."the present hand signals from somebody near the tunnel area to the tannoy box......is not unknown for this to be mistaken as a wave to a friend.....or simply be missed...."

He thought we should have something a bit more upbeat to welcome the team on to the pitch " Right here, Right Now" by FBS perhaps

Some interesting points

Spot on. I think the build up to the game and the stream of 70's punk/crap in embarrassing (speaking as one who was there in the 70's too). The build up is un-inspiring. The players trot out to a reception similar to a county league game. And Atilla/other bloke trying to lead singing of "we want Falmer..." in cringe making.....

There's no reason to dump GOSBTS but it does need updating. Ever heard it played live by a really good silver/brass band? Now that is inspiring.

How about a new mix?

I remember going to Highbury a few years ago and their build up to the teams coming out was so professional - I hate fecking Arsenal but I was impressed. By the team they came out the crowd were at fever pitch.

I think overall the point AN is making is valid.

but that is the whole point isn't it andy.

the singing section only start singing if Krispies or the gang in front of him( or me occasionally) starts singing and they get when the team is out normally

There was good debate on 606 about singing at grounds on saturday, suggesting that as the government wanted more families at grounds and to price out the hooligans, people have become sanitised into sitting and watching at home matchesinstead of singing like most teams do at away games..

Our side of the singing section sings.

I first heard this song from Miles Whooten (who comes form Brighton apparently):

GREAT FISH FINGER DISASTER

Come all you gallant sailors
Who sail across the sea
And listen to this story
I'm about to tell to thee
Concerning those bold fishermen
Who sail the seas so wet
A hunting for fish-fingers
With a harpoon and a net

Twas in the year of 84
or was it 83?
That we set sail from Brighton Pier
Bound for Americee
The storms they was a-raging
And the waves a dreadful sight
It took us forty days, me boys
To reach the Isle Of Wight

Our captain's name was Gladys
And he wore a dress of red
Which might have been the reason
He was not married
He was the gay old sea dog
And it was his favourite joy
To take a stroll around the deck
With the handsome cabin boy

Two hundred miles from Iceland
A mighty shoal we spied
MacFisheries Fish-fingers
Came a-floating against the tide
We set off in our longboats
But then our luck we cursed
Alas we were too late
The chinese take-away got there first

Those slant-eyed heathens came at us
They was a dreadful crew
All brandishing computers
And giving it the old Kung-Fu
We sang to them a sea shanty
But they did not want to know
Their skipper felled our mizzen mast
With one Karate blow

We came back to old England
A twelve months and a day
It would have been much quicker, but
We took the pretty way
No more I'll go fish-fingering
On the frozen arctic shore
Next year I'll hunt duck-burgers
On the downs at Falmer

as gully mentions GOSBTS is a marching tune from the 1st ww. as well as our own words 2 versions have been written, the latter by norman wisdom. we are the ONLY county to have a county tune and it is played every year at the trooping of the colour. it makes you proud to hear it being played infront of thousands (millions tv viewers) in the centre of london. last year when sussex won the championship you could hear being played on every radio and tv station. to me thats great and we should not contemplate changing it, as we did in the early eighties which was a disaster.

Email sent to the Argus:
Is it little wonder that the Evening Argus is losing readers. You have no idea what your readers wants. Your support for Brighton is frankly quite laughable at times. I used to write for Argus Woman so know how you used to be. To suggest that BHA get rid of GOSBTS is quite frankly stupid to put it politely. It is not an age thing even. My children Ben and Olivia (10 & 16) like modern music but as Season Ticket Holders they love GOSBTS. It is ours. Not some "Simply the best" tune like all the others have. We are not American. It is unique in the same way that Leicester run out to the sound of the horn. Do you not support Brighton? Do you not understand their fans. Or is it just to wind them up to increase your postbag? If you stood at Cardiff as they played GOSBTS you would never in a million years want to get rid of it. And on NSC you are definitely turning readers away.
At WHU you only gave Kuipers a 7 yet NOTW put him in the team of the day, and under matchfacts you had us playing Crewe. It would be great to have a paper that cared about their local team but alas we have the Argus who only cares about circulation but still pumps out an outdated style.

Great idea. Let's ditch our own unique, historical and inspiring club song - about the last reminder in place on a matchday that this is actually the same club that once played at the Goldstone - and replace with something blatantly ripped off from the bland, corporately-acceptable marketing-driven Premiership. I hate being told when to cheer, when to make noise. I find it patronising.

That Perseus was hilarious, if not totally PC.

Singing is one of the things I like most about footy, especially following the Albion, there is a certain spontaneity and humour to it which contributes to the whole experience. For those fortunate enough to have been to the odd North American sports match (Basketball, Ice Hockey and Baseball) where they have loud piped music at certain points during the game is enough to put me off doing the same for football, there is simply no comparison.

I agree that we should have pre-match music that appeals to all, some music translates well to a football stadium environment and some doesn't, there is surely a happy medium where nothing causes offence. My personal taste would include stuff by FBS and the likes of Fun Lovin Criminal, some of their tracks include expletives, clearly that would not be suitable for all audiences.

not the same as running out to 6,500 people though is it? Agreed the pre-game music (as good as it is) does not appeal to a vast majority of fans so maybe Attila should look at that. We can save the fancy PA and build up to GOSBTS for Falmer, it just wont work that well at Withdean, granted it would be better but not by that much. Either way you simply cannot Ditch GOSBTS for the teams run out, thats just stupid.

Amen to that. Actually, I find the concept of a 'singing section' patronising as well.

MOH...I don't really think that is what Andy N is getting at. I think what he is saying that GOSBTS will always be the club song and we will always sing it....which we do at away games and home games many times during a match. I think he is pushing the suggestion that we are appearing to be more like a club living in the past ( I am not agreeing with him BTW) in that our "song" is a First World War song and our resident DJ prefers 70's punk stuff than modern up to date chart stuff.

I have for many years being banging on about playing stuff that people recognise from the radio...and have been shot down many times by Atilla I may add!!!

I think it is all about trying to get an atmosphere going. If we can't do it ourselves would playing better music help? I dont know, but perhaps its worth a try.

BTW To the large one...why is having a troup of dancing girls sexist?

It has been brought to my attention that you have called for the Albion change the anthem that they run out to before each game.

As I refuse to buy the drivel that now is the Argus I have not read the article but I have been informed that the word "uninspiring" is used.

Being a Stoke fan I expect that you do not understand what Sussex by the Sea means to the people of Sussex and to Brighton fans.

Perhaps you might understand if it was put to you that Stoke stop signing Delilah and start singing The Teletubbies theme tune before each game.

Get a grip Mr Naylor.

Sorry Dave but I really doubt very strongly that changing the music policy away of Attila's very cool selections will make two shits worth of difference to the atmosphere at Withdean. The performance of the team does. (T'was ever thus - whisper it but even the atmosphere at the Goldstone was quiet and flat when the team were crap. It's normal!)

I LOVE the fact that our tannoy music is interesting and different and a million miles away from the kind of awful daytime Southern FM-friendly dirge by the likes of Atomic Kitten that privatised utility companies play as their hold music to try and show that they're "with it". Sod that for a game of soldiers.

Randoms:

Everton are a great club purely because of the 'Theme from Z-Cars'

EVERY team should come out to 'Simply The Best' by Tina Turner

Teams that come out to epic classical music look stupid - that piece from Tchaikovski's 'Romeo and Juliet' is only slightly less ridiculous than coming out to 'O Fortuna' from Orff's Carmina Burana.

Surely Naylor could have come up with something else to right about - although following on from his 'stop winging' piece he does seem to be putting more thought into coming up with livelier pieces - livelier- but in this case stupid

Sir Dick DID get rid of the round badge - which I still think was unforgiveable

I'd like us to come out to 'Soon' by My Bloody Valentine

That would be COOL

MoH/TLO - you're missing the point. Nothing wrong with "our" song. But the build is distinctly Div 3/4 or whatever it's called these days. We need to move on. I'm sure Attila and Samrah do a good job but it still reminds me of gloomier times. We've got a successful team with the best manager we have ever had (IMHO) - all we need is a decent stadium but in the meantime we need to move on.
