Another vote for Chilli Pickle if you fancy something slightly different from the norm. The oxtail Madras is amazing.

One thing I love about bad indian restaurants are the bad photos of the "stars" who have eaten there that often decorate the walls.

I wish they would put an honest caption underneath them - something along the lines of Keith Harris had the shits for a week after this picture was taken.

The best Indian restaurant I have ever been in is Chutney Mary on the Kings Road, not your usual one to be honest but the food blows you away. Simply amazing and not that expensive.

But for the best "take away style", another mention for the Junaki in Heathfield mentioned above. It really is that good. If it was in Brighton you'd all be talking about it.

Up here we have the Bombay Bicycle Club which again is brilliant and I think more "authentic" Indian food.

However, I don't really agree with the authentic is better argument to honest, it's simply not always the case. I had some amazing food in non tourist Spain, but I've had some shocking food as well. The point being that I've often eaten better Spanish food in London than I have in Spain, but also the opposite.

The westernised version of Indian Food isn't something that be sniffily looked down out. Quite the opposite, it's something that both nations should be proud of. We often hear that pretentious "fusion food" phrase, but I don't see why it should it be applied to one of the greatest culinary fusions on earth. The Great British Indian Take Away.

Let's hear it for the curry, served with Lager.

Having lived in Bradford i have eaten many brilliant curries. I can honestly say that the Shahi on Beaconsfield Road is up there with them. Consistently brilliant.

If you want a reasonably priced curry in pleasant surroundings, served by a very polite and friendly husband and wife team try Papadoms in Portland Road.

Sorry to say but I wholeheartedly agree that the Ashoka lives on it's past reputation. Will try the Ganges though, thanks everyone.

For a quality takeaway IMHO the best by far is a hidden gem called Kamals in Upper Hamilton Road. Have used it for more years than I can remember.

If by past you mean last week. Best curry I've ever had and always fantastic, attentive service.

The best curry house in East Sussex by a country mile is The Junaki Restaurant in Heathfield high street. The chef part owns it so his food needs to be good, I've never had a bad meal there and they are really nice people.

The worst curry I ever had was in Dublin, I was told by the Bangladeshi's in the Junaki that is because they were probably Indians. Sounds strange I know but over 90% of Indian restaurants in the UK are actually run by Bangladeshi's many of whom don't get on with their neighbours (bit like the Scots and the English) and by all accounts make a shit Tikkai Masala

Mr India is the place to go now in Heathfield fella.

Junaki has gone right down hill.

1/2 mile from LDC country
I've tried the Ashoka as well as many other curry houses in Brighton and Hove and have to report that, from my point of view, Ganges is by far and above the others.

I have even been known to travel from Saltdean to Ganges and back (a 16 mile round trip) to pick up a takeaway, such is the quality of the food.

[I agree with some other posters who say that the Ashoka used to be good but is now average]

After your HERCULEAN effort in Bradford a few years back, I find that hard to believe! :lolol:

Are you refering to the SOL do? Where we all chipped in a load of cash and told the waiter to feed us? That was mammoth.

Wow. Dedication to the cause. I'm blessed as it's 5 mins away.

Hove tandoori is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has gone downhill FAST recently - sag aloo always tastes burnt.

I had a takeaway from Ashoka the other day due to good early reviews on this thread, but will be sure to try Nishat and Ganges very soon thanks to some later comments... Ashoka was good, though not quite as good as the Hove Tandoori used to be...

More curry houses to try.... chore!
