Being a vegetarian I've been to the Bombay Aloo a few times on Ship Street, not your traditional curry house but do have an all you can eat menu. Its all a bit "biriany" and can be a bit hit and miss sometimes, but its cheap.

Anybody who goes to the Ashoka is missing out big time. Next door, you have the Ganges, a FAR better restaurant! Although it's smaller than the Ashoka, it's always atleast half full and rammed on a Friday and Saturday.

Seriously, next time anyone on here thinks about going to the Ashoka, go to the Ganges and you wont be disappointed.

fair play, I havent been there for 20 years. It has been jazzed up these days, but back in the day it made spice nutriment seem like the hotel du vin....

One of the few things that make being an exile OK in these parts (Leeds) are the curries.
Takeaway price for a 'normal' type curry is about £4.50 and may include chapattis or rice or £6 for a special.

How much are the takeaways now in good old B&H. ?

I've been to several curry houses in Leeds and NEVER had one half as good as anywhere in Brighton. Same for Nottingham.

Best takeaway locally is AGRA (Fiveways, Brighton) consistently fantastic food and quality staff. Staying on the outskirts of Birmingham overnight tomorrow at the same hotel we stayed at for the 20/20 finals in the Summer and will be having a curry down the road at the Edgbaston Tandoori (Hagley Road) again it was superb then and is the main reason we are staying over. It really is that good!

Anyone in this thread who claims theyve never been to a shit curry house probably has never been to a good one and has no refined taste to compare.

I would say 5% of curry houses can be classed as quality jobs, but the rest are usually the standard crap.

Ashoka is good but over-rated. There are loads better. Ganges is as good.

I actually think the Ganges is better. Really nice owners as well.

Last time I ventured from Ashoka to Ganges I ended up spending FOUR days on the shitpan.

The thing with the Ashoka is that its reputation was gained a long time ago when its was very good.. Since then it has become average but has kept its reputation because its not crap.

The ganges next door is better but the best Indian I have ever had in the Brighton and Hove area is from Nishats on Preston St.. Take away or delivery only though..

The amount of people I have converted to this place is truly amazing... They thought they knew the best place until they tried Nishats...

If you're gonna try them all, start with Nishats, you won't bother with the rest..
