Let's face it much of the press are repugnant slime which ever side of the world you like on. I certainly wouldn't want to be defined by ignorant journalists form either country. However we do (all) encourage them by buying their rags in the first place. I would rather they would write stupid articles like the ones quoted but they have columns to fill whether it embarrasses or not.

i did not write that....it is not my post.

Not really . When you mouth off for so long like the Aussies, they have to take it back a bit when they fall flat on their faces.

and the cycle will keep cycling. Basically what I was trying to say was that there are people in both countries (all countries) that will act like dicks when they are winning. By the same token most people enjoy a bit of well meaning good natured banter and don't take it too seriously.

What do the press do? try to sell newspapers will sensational crap.

Still find it hard to believe that a great sporting nation (Australia) currently lies in 23rd place in the medals table below the likes of Belarus and Cuba. It must be especially painful to look up the table and see NZ in 14th place with three golds...

I saw two yellow and green vests take first and second in the men's 100m and thought that, finally, Australia had arrived at the Olympics.

I was wrong. :(

So if Brighton only finish 2nd in the Championship this season, you'll be calling the team a bunch of losers?
1) The goal in the Olympics is to win gold, not to finish 2nd. The goal for Brighton is to get promoted in the next 4 years, so 6th and winning the play-offs within 4 years will equal success.
2) I am not talking about 1 individual Aussie failing, I am talking about the whole team failing to win events. They are doing poorly and they will see their tally in the games so far as a failure.

Your views on the Olympics are utterly warped.

The Olympics are first and foremost about participation.

This guys more inspiring than a Usain Bolt even though he won't win a medal or even make a final.

Winning gold might be the highest achievement, but it is not the goal for every athlete. Back in 96 and again in 2000, I had the opportunity to train with a group of Pacific Islander sprinters heading to the Olympics. They were all ran out in the first round of the 100s, but one broke his national record. Try telling him he didn't achieve his goal.

That is spot on.
But, I don't think the Australian press will be happy with their athletes general performance though.
In the next Olympics, rugby sevens is to be included and you will see a pretty serious involvement from the likes of Fiji and Tonga. They won't be coming with any other thoughts than to win medals because it's a sport they take seriously.

It's only really been the mens 4x100m freestyle and Magnussen in the 100 free who have come in for any real criticism as such. Badfish is right - the newspapers will do what they have to do to sell copies (and I write this as an ex-journalist), and I suspect in the aftermath of the games the topic will shift to the level of taxpayer funding for Olympic sports etc.
I think you also have to weigh up the comments athletes make and the expectations they have prior to the games (which are often generated from a motivational point of view, but also raise public expectation) with their reflections after them (which are often much more realistic and objective)

He might well make the 400m relay final, actually.
