I feel like I must be in a minority of one on this site, in that I'm actually quite proud of how Australia are doing. Sure, it would have been nice to have a few more gold medals at this point, but that doesn't mean I'm not happy with the results that have been achieved. I am seemingly the only person here who doesn't see an Olympic silver medal as an amazing achievement. And when you consider the total number of medals we have won, I think we're actually still punching considerably above our weight.
(awaits humiliation from fellow NSCers)

I think the issue is really the high standards that have been set by Australia in the past. The medal haul is still pretty impressive for a country of Australia's size but i suppose not as impressive as previous Olympics which is what people are focusing on.

It is not really surprising that a fair amount of glee is being experienced on a British forum as their is still a big rivalry between or nations. Despite the continued and sustained success of Anglo Australian teams like Real Madreadful!

Australian Golds:

Thought they were competing against America but ended up competing against American Samoa.

|No it isn't. 1 gold is not impressive for the 22 million Australians. Silver and Bronze tally is fair, but it's winning that counts, and Australia are losing. They are a sporty nation and their golds per capita must be appalling.

You really don't get it at all, do you - completely over your head why it's so funny that the Aussie media will find literally ANYTHING to talk about other than the fact that a) they are doing so badly, and b) that the Brits are doing so well.

While it's quite funny the Austalian cyclists/rowers/swimmers are all imploding, that is understandable, these things come in cycles and we will have our downturn in fortunes.

What I don't think you get at all is the laughable way the Australian media cover (or rather don't cover) sport when they are losing. It's the way a sulky child would edit a newspaper.

And we can consign the phrase 'Whingeing Pom' to the dustbin of history once and for all. Australia are THE worst losers in the world, bar none.

No I get it.

Your basing a really stupid point of view on a few poorly written articles.

I assume you read every daily publication from Melbourne, Adelaide,Perth, Hobart, Brisbane to beleive that what you think is happening is a nation wide held view.

If you look a little deeper I think you'll find most of the anti-brit rubbish published comes from that shithole Sydney's media outlets.

Anyone who knows anything about Australia knows that Sydney's views on anything are on the whole nothing like the rest of the nations views.

The whinging Pom is still very much alive, they just all live in Queensland though. ;)

Fair point but all countries go through fallow periods. Some people just don't know how to be gracious in victory. Enjoy it while it lasts as they say. (And by some people I mean Australians Brits and some people in all nations).

mate they are all at it , foxtel and the usual free to air tv "pundits".........make them fuckers try and do better , it's the same with the cricket and rugby union commentators....if they know so much why aren't they in a coaching position....?? f*** 'em

The channel 9 coverage that I have seen of this Olympics and who ever had the last ones has been piss poor. Generally the standard of sports journalism is awful compared to the UK where if you require intelligent debate and insight into a sporting event you can easily find it. hype and bullshit is the order of the day and it is very hard to find anything else (if anyone can point me in the direction of it i would be most grateful).

''Australians''

Yep! During a sustained period of dominance in many sports. Read the thread again, we are (some of us) becoming just as bad

Of course. We got 1 gold in 96, and I still remember being depressed at how bad we were, and grateful for Steve Redgrave.
Some people just don't know how to be gracious in victory.
That's not what this particular thread is about though. It was an Aussie article laughing at how bad Britain is, so this is the thread where we shouldn't be magnanimous, this is the thread where we rub their noses in it. We can be classy in other threads.

I'm not pissed off at anything.

More bemused by a few idiots who read a silly article and then equate it to a whole nations views. A nation they know fark all about.

It's like reading that article about the Brits who abused the Aussie cycling fans. An idiot would say they(the Brits) are all mouthy yobs like that. A reasonable person would say it's the views of a small minority that don't represent the majority in the slightest.

The majority of sports journos want to cover the AFL on the whole.

How ever some sports are covered very well here. Aussie cycling fans are spoiled by SBS excellent coverage. We're lucky to have the wonderful Phil Liggett calling the cycling for us.

Let's face it much of the press are repugnant slime which ever side of the world you like on. I certainly wouldn't want to be defined by ignorant journalists form either country. However we do (all) encourage them by buying their rags in the first place. I would rather they would write stupid articles like the ones quoted but they have columns to fill whether it embarrasses or not.

Not really . When you mouth off for so long like the Aussies, they have to take it back a bit when they fall flat on their faces.
