At a cost of in excess of £150M every year since the war for the population of 3,000 wouldn't it be cheaper to give them each £ 500,000 and let them drive on the right ?

At a cost of 90+ billion a year wouldn't it be cheaper to give everyone a wedge of money so we can take out private insurance !!

What is all this 'we' and 'us'? Its got f*** all to do with any of us.

It has got signifigance to anyone or the families/friends of anyone who served there in 1982. I have a mate who was on the Sir Galahad, he survived but plenty of his comrades and friends didn't. I think he will give a "f***" about it, and rightly so.

I would agree with this but haven't we already tried to give it back on maintenance cost grounds and tried in discussions with the Islanders and Argies to come to some "arrangement" whereby it's the Argies in name but preserving the status quo.

Should be Falklands 3,there was also a battle there in the 1st.World war when the German navy tried to attack the Islands,my Great Uncle fought in the Royal Navy there.

Yes it was a revenge fixture for the battle of Coronel off the coast of Chile, the Krauts stuffed us there, but we sank 3 out of 4 of their South Atlantic squadron at the Falklands.

I had an uncle who died in the earlier Battle of Coronel in 1914, one of the precursors to The Battle of the Falklands. He was a Brighton [St. Lukes] boy and was killed in action at the so tender age of 16 yrs. I understand a memorial was unveiled in the school a couple of years ago to commemorate the brave fallen.

ah, thats all we need- Falklands2... this time there's no ships.

A war with Argentina got Thatchers Government in for a second term when her popularity was low and the country was in a mess, could Dave be going down the same route, please no

Wait and see what happens if they strike oil which they're doing test drills down there at the moment. If they do strike it then it will kick off again.

True, her popularity was lower than when she got in, but I think she would have still got in with a lesser majority. After all it wasn't that long since the Labour party left the country in a mess in the 70's. Feels like something similar has happened again.....

Unlikely to happen for several reasons, neither Britain nor Argentina can afford a war. The Falklands is very securely defended at present and the Argies would get the mother of all responses if they tried it. Also, the Labour opposition would likely back any military action if Argentine aggression provoked it. As bad as Miliband is, he's not on the same scale of incompetence that Michael Foot was. The modern Labour Party is nowhere near as entrenched in Quaker ideals and pacifism that the party under Foot represented.

if you apply that logic, we should dispose Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland, the North, probably Cornwall, and much of the west. end up with the black country to the north sea, down to the channel.

no, that would requie some sort of ideology. couldnt resist.

unlike in 1982, the US would be duty bound to back us too.

If Scotland became independant, who would have the rights for North sea oil ?

Am I alone in thinking that we shouldn't own an island that is thousands of miles away from us?
When you say own, it is owned by the people that live there, not by us. Who do you think should own it, Argentina, just because they're closer? Could you remind me when Argentina last owned the Falkland Islands (it's a trick question).

Well if you ask that twat Alex Salmond, Scotland. But if the British government was looking to make such a deal, I'd camp outside downing street and ask you lot to join me. It would be fairest to split the revenue on a per capita basis. Scotland chose to join England in about 1706 (can't be bothered to check) because it suited them, they can't just say they want to leave now we've found oil. That would be like Aberdeen or the Orkney islands declaring independance and saying the oil is all theirs.

Away with the fairies
So thirty years after The battle for the Falklands / Las Malvinas, we happen to post our next king there to coincide with the anniversary.

Salt and wound comes to mind.

Aren't we bigger than this?

We had a potential king fighting there during the war (Prince Andrew), it's not unusual for royalty to serve in the services, so sod the Argies.
