We won the war. We can send whoever we want to visit the Falklands. Surely?
I think you'll find that the local residents own very little of the islands. "Ownership" is in the hands of the Crown. The locals don't even have the right to pass any laws that matter. That right lies with HM the Q, acting through the Privy Council. When you say own, it is owned by the people that live there, not by us. Who do you think should own it, Argentina, just because they're closer? Could you remind me when Argentina last owned the Falkland Islands (it's a trick question).
The locals here don't have the right to pass laws either. But my understanding is that should the oil there become viable and valuable, the proceeds wouldn't go into the British treasury, but would belong to the islanders, hence my comment that they own the islands. If you've got any links to show that the British treasury would get the oil, I'll stand corrected.I think you'll find that the local residents own very little of the islands. Yes we do. We elect a government that passes laws. The residents of the Falklands don't vote in UK elections, but get laws that get passed in London. The locals here don't have the right to pass laws either.
Oil companies make good money, but it's nothing compared to the owners of the oil. It's not the oil companies that are trillionaires, it's the countries in the middle east.It will be the oil companies who make the money , the tax revenues will make the FI self sufficient.
Just reading an old Guardian article on the subject which suggests that the oil wouldn't belong to the islanders:my understanding is that should the oil there become viable and valuable, the proceeds wouldn't go into the British treasury, but would belong to the islanders, hence my comment that they own the islands. Sod them...until the people there who are a majority British..
Lucky Thatcher didn't her way then....
Yes it was a revenge fixture for the battle of Coronel off the coast of Chile, the Krauts stuffed us there, but we sank 3 out of 4 of their South Atlantic squadron at the Falklands.
I had an uncle who died in the earlier Battle of Coronel in 1914, one of the precursors to The Battle of the Falklands. He was a Brighton [St. Lukes] boy and was killed in action at the so tender age of 16 yrs. I understand a memorial was unveiled in the school a couple of years ago to commemorate the brave fallen.

So thirty years after The battle for the Falklands / Las Malvinas, we happen to post our next king there to coincide with the anniversary.
Salt and wound comes to mind.
Aren't we bigger than this?
BBC News - Argentina condemns Prince William Falklands posting
Wait and see what happens if they strike oil which they're doing test drills down there at the moment. If they do strike it then it will kick off again.
