Are we a racist society or is it just the police who are so ? Or are there other reasons for the high black prison population ?

There are 2.3 million Black, Asian and Minority Women (BAME) in the UK, making up just under 4% of the total population of the UK. In 2002 BAME women made up less than 8% of the total female population of the UK but accounted for close to 31% of female prisoners. Black women are over-represented in prison. Black female prisoners make 26.4% of female prisoners while black males account for 24% of male prisoners. Black British women in prison make 11.6% compared to only 2% of all British women. British Asian women prisoners make 4% of the female prison population. There is a high number of foreign national prisoners and at present 1 in 5 women in prison are foreign nationals. Foreign national prisoners come from 168 countries (Jamaica, The Irish Republic, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey and India). A quarter is Jamaicans by far the largest group.

What does the over-representation of Black women in prison mean? Does that mean Black women commit more serious offences or that racism plays a part in the number of black women sentenced to prison? Most of research on women focuses on white women while research on race and criminal justice system focus on Black males. Is it the view that racism does play a part on the number of Black women sentenced to prison. Do black women suffer from triple oppression, race, class and gender disadvantages.

According to Home Office (2003/4) Race and the Criminal Justice, black people are just over six times more likely to be stopped and searched, three times more likely to be arrested, and seven times more likely to be imprisoned than white people. Black people are four times while Asian people are 3.5 times likely to be stopped under Terrorism Act, 2000 (ibid). It is agreed in British criminology that black people are less likely to receive probation. There is no research which has specifically looked at how often black women are stopped by the police in UK.

You'll find some of the arguments here - http://www.black-history-month.co.uk/articles/blackwomensexperiences.html

You know, where you cut and pasted that from.

But I wanted the view of NSC. I took the question and the introduction from the site but I wanted the views of ordinary people not blackcriminologists - though I`m sure they know what they are talking about.

According to Miller's prediction, by the year 2010, the majority of black men aged between 18-39 years will live behind the bars in US (National Association of Advancement of White People, 1999).

Blimey I've seen some leading questions in my time but that takes the biscuit:

"Is society racist or is it just the police..."

Hmmm....I think neither. Individuals are.

I've said this before some ethnics bring little positives to this country whilst most bring far greater negatives. 9 times out of 10 when you hear about people being stabbed or shot these people are to blame. This country just keeps getting worse at the moment, and will continue to do so all the while the punishments are so leniant.

But the report said that black men where so much more likely to be stopped than white men............... why.

Do the police think that black men are more likely to be up to no good..........
cripes... surely they dont think that do they.

I think it probably has more to do with socio-economics.

Youths in some ghettoised areas of big cities are more likely to be stopped and coincidentally these are statistically more likely to be black.

If the police was racist the numbers of asians, indians getting stopped would also be high.

Sorry, I thought you were passing someone else's words off as your own, and encouraging another race hate thread on NSC. Apologies.

The use of counter-terrorism stop and search powers has increased sevenfold since the July 7 attacks on Britain, with Asian people bearing the brunt of the increase, the Guardian has learned.
People of Asian appearance were five times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people, according to the latest figures compiled by British Transport police. None of the stops have resulted in a terrorism charge, the force said.

The statistics were the first from any force on the terrorism frontline and came amid rows about who police should target and how often they should use powers allowing officers to search people without having reasonable grounds to suspect

That is stop and searching for SPECIFIC reasons though - not just the random stops black people are more likely to be victim of.

I am sure more Irish people were stopped during the IRA's campaigns.

The police might be stopping black people for a specific reason as well. Cannot for the life of me think of one but maybe someone on here might know.

How would the police have known they were irish? Was it the guiness hats or the leoprachaun outfits.
