I wouldn't mind betting that City already know what the punishment will be but have threatened the Premier League with expensive litigation if it's announced before the end or season or they have negotiated the punishment down.

This whole two of the big six thing - it’s been a very high quality PL season, it’s rare to have such competitive teams right down the league; last season only 9 teams broke 50pts, season before that 10, this season is likely 12 - I’m not even sure it’s happened before, certainly not in the last decade.
We’re on 55, our second highest with 2 to play in a league that half the table will finish on 55+ points - incredible.

My original thinking was that any team who won a European competition gets a place in the next league up the following season and an extra seasonal place cannot be awarded to another club because of their victory. Thus we have 8 places (5+2+1) and any other places won by teams who haven't already qualified. With Spurs or United winning the Europa League and Chelsea (already in a European place) but not making the ECL, that would become (6+3+0)

Slightly frustrating their final is after the season ends if this is true but a glimmer of hope if the ultimate acca comes off!

There are two scenarios to consider.
1) If Chelsea loses to Betis OR finishes top 5, yes - 7th place team will be in the Conference League.
6+2+1 with Spurs/United and Palace, leaving 7 qualifying by league position.
2) If Chelsea beat Betis AND finish 6th or 7th, no - Chelsea take an EL slot along with the other team in those places. England’s Conference League allocation is reduced by one, to zero.
6+3+0, also including Spurs/United and Palace.
The key thing is that reduction clause, meaning only the top 7 can now qualify for Europe in either scenario. Media reporting that 8th can still qualify are missing the significance of that clause, understandable given the complexity.

Thanks for trying to explain. Its still a bit complicated tbh. I have twice read there are some scenarios where 10 English clubs could qualify? tbough all the caveats are confusing.
Just in your point 2 about UECL allocation being reduced by 1 to zero?
Newcastle won it by winning Carabao, and because they'll definitely finish in a higher completion league place, that went to next in league. Still don't quite get how that can just vanish as it was Newcastles and then next in league as Newcastle are going to be CL or UEL?
We probably won't finish 8th anyway so academic!

If Chelsea win UECL and finish 7th in PL it goes to 8th.
Chelsea last game of season is away at Forest. If Forest don't beat West Ham tomorrow and lose or even draw (with their inferior GD v Chelsea) it can't happen.
Forest must win later today at West Ham and then beat Chelsea in last game at home. If Forest win both games, then higher liklihood Chelsea may finish 7th. Villa would need a win or draw at Old Trafford and City 1 point from 2 games.
Forest winning twice is key.

We do not deserve to be playing in Europe after the season we have had. Just take the points we dropped at home to Southampton, Ipswich and Wolves, plus the FOUR we dropped to Leicester. If we'd have seen those out (2-0 up in stoppage time in two of them), we would be level with Man City and in a good spot to qualify for the Champions League. That's without even mentioning the home shitshows against Palace and Everton, and the capitulations at Brentford, Fulham and Forest.
The fanbases sense of 'oh, at least we aren't still at Priestfield/Withdean' is one we really need to collectively get over if we are ever to achieve anything of note IMO. If f***ing Palace can win silverware, it isn't beyond our reach.

City's lawyers have been making it very clear exactly how long they will be dragging this out, should the EPL grow a pair and issue the appropriate sanctions.
Ultimately the legal fees will have to be paid by the other 19 clubs,
Eventually the EPL will get the clubs to vote on whether this is pursued any further.
It will be intersting to see which clubs vote to let them off the hook.
