I have done no exercise whatsoever for over 10 years. The route us about 55 miles. Thanks for the donation and from everyone else and any ideas. I will leave the thread now and bounce it the week before the ride for fear of getting on people's nerves.

May I ask a few questions, US?

a) In what way are you 'putting yourself on the line'?
b) Why on earth did you get a £1500+ bike for a relatively simple 55 mile bike ride? I'm going to Cornwall in a couple of weeks, perhaps I'll buy a space shuttle to get me there.
c) Are you actually going to do it this time? It would be nice to see you post a 'challenge completed' message rather than a 'I couldn't do it because of xxx' for a change.

And before you go mental and accuse me of bullying, I'll sponsor you a tenner if you complete it (as long as you don't mention your dog more than ten times between now and then). But I also think HKFC's has a point, and that you should answer his question.

Gareth, don't just leave the questions from Lokki and myself unanswered. Explain what will be done with the funds you raise. People are very generous. Make an effort to make them believe in the causes, and your donations will flood in.

The HISTORY of REMF is an inspirational one. It was a great idea, born of a terrible tragedy. But (some) people won't continue to donate for ever, just because of the spirit of the thing. Explain what the money is FOR.

F..uck me, imagine if he was swimming the channel or something.

Just to add, I did look at the Justgiving links and the REMF website (as well as reading this thread) before posting as nowhere is it clear where the money raised from this will go. I am not trying to stir just genuinely keen to know as this is such a high profile fund raising effort. I think it would raise more if people knew what they were donating to and perhaps that could be clearer.

When I was about 14, a mate and I cycled to Selsey Bill and back for the day. It was done on a 3 gear Raleigh bike with no training or prep, in fact we didn't even tell our parents and the only food we had was a can of Pepsi and a Mars bar each from a shop in Selsey..... and people today don't believe you.

I think to be fair I have done numerous threads over the years especially when chairman for 10 years and posted every donation made since the outset, who it was going to where it was going to and done numerous list and updates with all clubs donated to since 2001. I will however do an update and put together a list of donations made and the idea behind the fund for new people who maybe do not know all the details. That is a good suggestion for this thread.

The REMF. The REMF helps support kids from 5-16 in the UK and overseas to play football in the name and memory of Robert Eaton who would otherwise not have the facilities or resources to do so.

If I wanted to be patronised I'd have rung up my ex wife.

I don't understand what you mean. You asked me where the monies raised will go and I told you.

If you type remf in the advanced search it has 326 threads with REMF updates I and others have done over the years.

Chaps this is getting very painful.

Is it possible vendettas and charitable deeds do not mix.

If you don't like the charity or have concerns about the charity don't support it, just make sure that money goes elsewhere.

I believe you because I've heard that story ten times now.

I agree. It is on a par with undertaking a sponsored silence at primary school.

Agree with Stat here. Please don't be aiming personal digs at Gareth, who is giving up his own time and energy, to do a good thing. It's completely not needed, and makes you look pretty spiteful.

The questions about what the REMF is aiming to do with its funds though - what its current strategic plan is - is entirely valid. Gareth or Tony would be doing the charity a big service by spelling that out. A clear message on that would definitely help to increase donations. Best of luck.
