How he performed in an ultra defensive Hughton side is one thing, but he hardly started for us last season under Potter.

This is true, but why?

After scoring against Bournemouth he came on against Chelsea a few days later and scored his worldie. These showings earned him a start away at Bournemouth - and he blew his chance. The positions he plays in are the most competitive in our squad (except maybe centre back) and we've added Alexis MacAllister and Adam Lallana since then. He can't have invisible games and expect a prolonged run in the side.

, so your argument falls apart there.

I don't really have an argument. I'm happy to go with whatever the management team decide. If they see enough in him he'll get games. If he does well, he'll stay in the side, and if he succeeds and helps win matches for the team I love - I'll cheer as hard as anyone.

These stats from last season, per 90 minutes, shed some light on AJ's lack of game time.

I've ranked each player in order for each criteria.

So in summary, after adding all 4 players ranking in each criteria, here is their average rank.

1st Pascal Gross 2.16
2nd Solly Marsh 2.38
3rd Leandro Trossard 2.46

And to answer the OP. NO, his 25% shooting accuracy is not what we need in a striker.

You're barking up very much the wrong tree, I'm afraid.

You'll see very, very few 'negative' posts from me about any aspect of the way the club is run, or is headed. Nor about the management team (the current or past ones).

We will never all rate every player. The one under discussion here has unfortunately come up short, thus far, and is presumably only still with us, because nobody else wants him at the wage we're committed to paying. That's not his fault - he seems a really hard-working, likeable guy, who desperately wants to do well - we all saw what his first goal meant to him. I don't 'hate' him - that's a ridiculous and childish thing to suggest. I simply don't think he's been very good - and it amuses me, the lengths people will go to to explain that away.

To be fair, a good number of the squad were not "very good" for most of last season, hence their being regularly trashed on here. I can't see what we have to lose.

Thanks for posting some stats, they always bring some perspective to the discussion that is often lacking.

I'm going to assume AJ's cross to Maupay against Chelsea towards the end of the game counts a pass despite it coming in from the right and near the byline. Otherwise his cross accuracy of 0% is incorrect.

With my Ali J hat on, you'd hope and expect those numbers to improve if he was afforded the luxury of starting more than 2 games in a row. I would also expect everyone else's stats to be lower if they were as in and out of the side as much as Ali J has been.

.

This'll come as a great surprise to many on NSC.

Most of the footballers currently plying their trade in the Premier League are a long way behind Pascal Gross in the metrics you are using.

If only we could encourage him to shoot more often, someone with his ability to put the ball precisely where he wants it deserves more goals.

Agreed, and his lack of minutes does make his stats run the risk of outliers.

With regards to his crossing stats, you'd need to take it up with OPTA.

Potter has a history of 'retooling' players... look what he did to Burn..... and Ali J can shoot... where he has been playing most of the time didnt give him a lot of opportunity to do that.... if Brewster doesn't come in might be our Plan B and might.

Trossard doesn't inspire me with confidence as he doesn't look a goalscorer to me... more a mix of Noone and Gross... not sure he has a position that suits him in our structure.

Maupay and Ali J as a front two..... hmm that sounds good.

Ive had the feeling several times when Ali has had good chances that he tends to try too hard. Playing him out off position hasn't worked. His show reel shows great clinical finishing. The 're tooling' quote is exactly what Potter should be thinking because I think he's a potentially great player for us.

Didnt AJ get an assist against Watford?

Not according to Squawka.com, who use OPTA stats.

Here's OPTA's definition of an assist:

Goal Assist
The final touch (pass, pass-cum-shot or any other touch) leading to the recipient of the ball scoring a goal. If the final touch (as defined in bold) is deflected by an opposition player, the initiator is only given a goal assist if the receiving player was likely to receive the ball without the deflection having taken place. Own goals, directly taken free kicks, direct corner goals and penalties do not get an assist awarded.

Ok but then the stats are masking reality where AJ effectively earnt us a point with his ball into the box.

I’m going to be so annoyed if he’s played as a striker this season, and scores a hatful of goals.

The last two seasons of bed wetting, waking at night in a panic cos of a our striker situation, and all the time we had one sitting on the bench,( or the stand, or the treatment room).:rant:

His Golf swing must be much better than PAscal Gross.

Hopefully GP has had him watching Mo Salah videos and is preparing to launch at Chealski with a 4-3-3

Albion win 4-3 in the 93rd minute.

Us (few) Ali J fans will bloody love it if he gets game time and proves all the “not even a footballer” NSC critics wrong. Will I gloat? Rely on it

I am delighted it looks like we are keeping him.

Yesterday you were not far off wetting the bed! :lolol:
