Its got to be a case now of back or sack imho. Either the club needs to give him better players and more firepower and really back him, or if they cant or aren't willing too, then sack, get a new man who can get more out of this squad of players.

With this squad and Potter, we're a busted flush and going nowhere.

Firstly, I don’t appreciate the patronising tone. I’ve spent my entire life watching Brighton in the FA Cup. I’m fully aware that big teams can be knocked out by minnows - that’s the beauty of it. It doesn’t make it okay though for the “giant” that’s been slayed though, does it? I doubt Bielsa’s patting his lads on the back tonight.

Secondly, it’s about context. Albion lost to Lincoln City in our promotion year. It was bloody disappointing at the time to be ousted by a team two divisions below us, but easy to get over because we were having a wonderful season. The difference here is that we are having an increasingly poor season. We haven’t beaten anybody in the PL for a long time and now we can’t beat a League Two team in 90/120 minutes with Potter playing a full strength team (minus Steele and in light of injuries) for crying out loud.

Logically, at what point do you see us winning a game?

It was not intended to be appreciated.

It sort of does make it "okay" for the losing giant. Its the second toughest national cup in the world, I think, in terms of upsets and giant killing. How common it is tells a story about how its not about all English "giants" being bad or failing miserably but rather about the amount of character, tradition and know-how there is in these strange towns and clubs. I dont think Bielsa is celebrating or jumping with joy but it wouldnt surprise me one bit if he is aware that this is not like in Spain or Argentina.

Logically, I could see a win away against Leeds or home vs Fulham. Against City... not so much.

Potter flatters to deceive, always seems quite close to putting together a really good side but missing a couple of key ingredients .. which never arrive. Perhaps that's down to recruitment but too many of our players look out of sorts. I'm still on the fence but only because I can't see any obvious replacement at the moment.

Very good post. Thought provoking points [emoji106]. I would only take umbrage with this though: “Tonight we should have won at a canter”.

This is the FA cup. If that was the case there’d never be giant killings. Bielsaball should have beaten Crawley at a canter, it didn’t. It’s classic, dodgy pitch, small team gets an upset.

Truth be told we played ok. But same old story. Can’t take our chances. Even Percy had a great opportunity and skyed it. We gave it away at the end too.

What I meant by a cantor we created enough and they didn't hurt us (we hurt ourselves). We should have walked off that pitch with a 2-0 win and gone home, not by playing any better. Newport didn't create an obvious chance all night we created 5 or 6 good ones. I didn't expect any more tonight especially on that pitch with opposition so used to it.

Some of us have seen the FA Cup before. Dyche didnt get sacked when Burnley lost to Lincoln, Alex Ferguson didnt get sacked when they lost to League One Leeds, Bielsa wont be sacked because they lost to Crawley... just to mention some. Its a difficult and wonderful cup and some are aware of it.

Apples and Pears.

Dyche is a master at his direct/longball craft and has consistently had Burnley with a tiny budget punching above their weight.
Sir Alex is the most successful manager of his generation and maybe all time.
As much as it pains, Bielsa has Leeds playing some terrific stuff, they always looks like they can score, he's a former Argentina manager, today is clearly an anomaly and Leeds will stay up comfortably.
Very successful in Sweden, OK in the championship, struggling in the PL, 1 home win in a year, devoid of ideas, constant tinkering, Players getting worse and its consistent. Newcastle was the anomaly.

If Potterball means having to witness hitherto decent players turned into shite like that then it needs binning.

That is how you see it, yes.

By better firepower, we can’t add between 30 and 50 non league strikers to our squad, all of whom would be better than what we’ve got. Because by firepower, you mean the ability to regularly score from inches out; a yard or so; and the penalty spot? All of which the existing squad have consistently proved they’re incapable of doing.

I’m not sure what the solution is really. I’ve never known such an incredibly bad at finishing bunch of footballers. It’s beyond comprehension. They simply cannot finish. Dreadful, possibly the worst bunch of players we’ve ever had when comparing chances to on target and conversion into goals. Miss after miss. Maybe it really is the hardest thing in football. Because put a Brighton player 1 foot out with only air to beat and I’ll back air every time at the moment.

IN.

But then, I wouldn’t change my view on the basis of a one off cup game away on a dodgy pitch.

Fill yer boots knee jerks.

I get that you are one of the optimistic fans, and I respect that you're not one of those optimistic fans that disappear when we lose (or get a result that feels like a loss), then criticises moaners for disappearing when we win well. I'm not in the Potter out camp. I never vote for a manager to lose his job, it's not my call, though I can understand why people would (and yes, why they wouldn't).

To that point - after a full calendar year with one home win, a run of 1 league win in 15 (a run that includes games against the 4 teams below us at the time, one of whom had managed 1 point in their 13 games prior to facing us (and none since) and were down to 10 men for more than half the game), topped off with needing a penalty shoot out (that went to sudden death) for a strong premier league line up to advance past a team three divisions below them, it is disingenuous to consider people who vote out as having a knee jerk reaction, or basing their decision on one game.

I disagree wholeheartedly. If you put out a team as strong as the one GP played (minus Steele), you’re absolutely going out there to win and not be a passive victim to the “drama” and “magic” of the cup.

Logic would say that team, which was stronger than the one played against Arsenal but couldn’t even beat a League Two team in normal time, won’t beat Leeds or Fulham. Obviously though, I’d love for you to be right.

Football isnt "logic" in that way, its far less binary. Liverpool could go unbeaten for about 28-29 games and then lose to a team like Watford. Sheffield could end up 9th in the PL one season, spend a lot of money and then months later have 2 points after 16 or 17 games into the next season.

Tonight, its the FA Cup, the team did pretty well in a no win situation. Newport were excellent, hats off to them. They held their shape in the first half and sussed us out for the second, man on Bissouma reducing his impact and attacking more as they realised we had, as per usual, run of of steam going forward.

Wider than this game, the club clearly has problems. Potter looks like a rabbit in the headlights when the whistle blows at half time, doesn’t appear able to impact a match. And reacts poorly to the media and fans. Signs of disdain, unhelpful given his job, or more likely stress. However we have so many players not performing i also look at recruitment. AJ is shot, Trossard has no motivation. Coach, recruitment, who knows, both by the looks of it.

But anyway, Potter in, he’s going nowhere this year because TB wont do anything, and we are a bit of luck away from a couple of wins and a more relaxed environment.

Thank you for the nice words, If results are your only criteria then for you it is Potter out.

I tend to look at the bigger picture and long term. All the strides the club are making, how close we are to building something special. A manager who is not afraid to blood a young player in the team, who can set us up to dominate possession against any club. And truth be told. You’d have to have a heart of stone not to think we deserved more points then we got in some games (eg Man Utd 100th minute penalty).

If you’re just looking at black and white results and short term, then what sort of manger do you want? A firefighter? And what after that? Sack him and get another? Do you want the Watford model. Look at saints. Stability is key.

No. No knee jerk responses here at all, honest.

Take a look at all the polls going back. There about as consistent as a the Southern Railways running times.

As someone who also looks at the bigger picture and long term, getting relegated would be pretty disastrous.

Changed since last poll to IN. Not a lot he could do tonight; picked a stronger team than for Arsenal. Simple fact is that too many players are not up to it; some have never been, others have lost form and confidence. Dunno whether that is poor recruitment, bad luck, poor training, or what. And possibly GP has not done enough to make them feel good enough. My instinct is that he has but they just are not. Yes he has tinkered but understandable when those he chooses don't deliver.

We are crap; simple as that. It might all change: couple of wins, renewed confidence, bit of luck, but right now very difficult to see where a win in 90 minutes against anyone is coming from.

If someone asked me what does Potter do well as as a manager I'd struggle to really give a quick and compelling answer.

With CH you could say straight away he at least bought some defensive strengths to the squad as a manager and his dour teams reflected that.

Potter's sides however have no identity, nothing that stamps them as being a team more a collective of individuals.

Potter is remarkably unremarkable in how his team's come across. As does he in interviews.

I guess the players performances reflect on him as a persona.

I agree at the moment but can't help but wonder if you have been able to give an answer back at the beginning of the season when we were playing teams off the field?

For me, the question hanging over him is about if he can get us back to playing like we were at the beginning of the year. I think we saw a bit of it in the second half against Wolves.

A cynic might suggest it was about time for the club bots to do their thing and sway the poll.

They will be delighted by the South Africans burying the negative posts on the social channels.

Thought the team looked like it was fighting for GPot v Wolves.

Didn't think that tonight. Out.
