Lots of nonsense on Twitter about us and Palace ruining the atmosphere - anyone out their actually witness this?

Sounds like a fall on to some glass and a lot of blood but no slashing/stabbing as some reported.

I was in Amsterdam - I saw a lot first hand. 10k over there - a few hundred or so being knobs. Burnley and Blackburn kicked off - about 2 or 3 on each side. Everyone shouted at them to stop it. Loads followed it down an alley. Rumours of Ajax being involved but not sure on that. Next the riot police cause absolute havoc. Difficult to know where the answer is but definitely a well OTTpolice reaction which aggregated people and caused trouble.

Can't agree with you mate. If "a few hundred or so are being knobs" what are the police supposed to do? How would you feel if you were a local resident and the police were tolerating assaults and aggression on people going about their day (see the many youtube clips to fill in some of the bits you missed).

Trying to make out that the problems are caused by the police aggravating fans clearly is not true. We've done this in cities all over Europe, the police can't be starting problems with us everywhere

In fact you get very little trouble in Amsterdam because the police are ready and waiting. Lots of plain clothed undercover cops there working with the bars, brothels and clubs to clamp down on any trouble immediately.

Just like in any ‘war’ the majority of casualties are innocent though. All England fans will be deemed fair game in the eyes of locals and local police. It’s been like that since well, all my supporting life and exactly why I’ve never followed England abroad. Not worth the risk not matter how small. I can hear plenty of people already saying ‘but we’ve followed for xyz years and never had any problems’. Well that’s your good fortune and long may it continue. Alternatively if you’re in a cafe and three blocks away there’s trouble and the Police burst in, arrest everyone who’s English despite locals protesting your innocence, take you away and beat you up before your own press and government brand you a hooligan without any sort of appeal, leading to your passport being restricted, your job and family security under threat...Well, I know people that’s happened to and it’s frankly too high a risk just because somebody with the same nationality who I’ve never met decides to throw a glass at some Foreign Robocop and WW3 kicks off.

Just caught up with this thread.

I was in Prague on Thurs-Saturday and was appalled at the media over reaction to the most minor incident.

There was no hostility, no violence. The one incident that was videoed (because Sky spend all the time following England fans trying to film trouble) was Czech police charging at England fans who were doing nothing wrong. I was there. England fans were drinking and singing and the police just got closer and closer until some fans panicked and ran and were chased by the police and pinned on the ground. It was crazy. None of the England fans deserved to be treated this way.

I haven’t gone to Bulgaria so can’t comment on tonight.

But it is clear that the local police in a lot of these countries don’t know how to handle England fans. They appear to want to confront them.

It is also clear that the English media want to find some trouble to report. They don’t go looking for it with other teams fans. They must have been gutted in Russia.

What I saw in Prague was well behaved fans having a good time. Nothing more at all. I was actually expecting much much worse given the stag weekend nature of the place.

The media should be applauding the fact that England fans have very largely removed most of the trouble makers and cleaned their act up. I’d say we are far better behaved than most countries fans in Europe now.

Knobs as in a bit ott pissed up. Prob only a few dozen breaking the law. One threw a bike in the canal for example. One thing I am 100% on is the police completely over reacted and smashed anyone they could reach the cowards. They 100% caused a scene that didn’t need to happen. I was there, I saw it. They then arrest 60 innocents on a bridge deliberately staying out of the trouble - the press then report x hundred arrests. That 100% happened on my last trip away. It was a mixture but there was a huge overreaction by police to a crowd doing not a lot wrong. Mates were in a kebab shop and got battoned out just for being English - was disgraceful.

Please stop with your first hand eye witness of events - it doesn’t fit the narrative of those on here who weren’t there and read the tabloids or watch a video of an isolated incident on Twitter. Thank you.

Exactly as I predicted in my post directly above yours. The Police, often para military, in these countries love an England visit nearly as much as the local Ultras. They literally have a licence to baton, stab, arrest and even murder without fear of any sort of retribution. It’s happened again and again and again over the decades. England’s reputation was formed in the 70s and many foreign authorities still respond like they are too.

Agreed we did Prague and actually didn’t really see too many large groups of England fans like you normally get. Actually we felt it was spot on, police presence we saw was ok

Bulgaria the same to be honest heavy police
Prescience but they’ve been in small groups and just sat in vans and cars. Thought England fans were very well behaved bar a couple of small isolated incidents

In all of this, let’s not forget our press and national obsession with any football related trouble means anything that happens will be exaggerated if not completely made up or staged. For example, in Sofia tonight it was reported several England fans didn’t finish their beers. Clearly, that’s utter bollokovs.

No they don't.

I get that police abroad are on heightened alert and are likely to wade in without much provocation, but lets just calm the hyperbole down a tad. No England fan has ever been stabbed or murdered by the police. This is NSC, not the Mail Online.

To be fair when my Dad went to the World Cup in Spain with Ford in the 80s, one of his party was arrested and locked up for a few days for doing nothing......

... An English man with exactly the same name has robbed a bank (or something similar) the previous year and legged it out the country before they could catch him.

The police came and whisked this poor bloke off from the hotel. He missed the game.

:lolol:

True story.

If you're called John Smith and you go abroad, then well. Frankly you're ASKING for trouble.

Sounds like naff all really .

Generally well behaved away . Few mobs but get that anywhere . Foreign police don’t help and then the media over blow it all .

Anyone gobbing off about it . Get out there . It’s a great piss up and good fun .

The problem is the media . Not the fans

And therein lies the problem. It's a great piss up and good fun.

Why is there a need for booze to have fun. Maybe, just maybe the locals don't want to suffer an out of key football chant where the volume just increases depending on the amount of booze consumed.

Why should they have have to suffer this just because football in England seems to be given a free pass as people roll out its only banter where's the issue.

Yes many fans don't act like this and act just as they would on a quiet night out when outside the ground. However far too many just believe that everyone else must bend to them and accept this.

Perhaps you should drop a line to #10 and ask when the UK has become the greatest place on earth how are things expected to go on matchday.

You never hear of Celtic and Rangers fans brawling at Scotland matches and their rivalry is immeasurably deeper than ours with Palace.

Edit: misread your post..

I've been to the world cup in Brazil and to the euros in France. I didn't see any trouble, so totally agree that most are legitimate fans. Though the reports are so regular now, we need to do more than we are currently doing. A new generation of anti foreign (especially European) coked to the eyeballs hoolies are coming through and we need to react to the things which are actually happening

I went to Italia 90....it was absolute mayhem & utter carnage.

These days its a walk in the park. Massively over hyped imo.
