What is fact is we have spent less on transfers this season so far than we did last season.
I suspect though, although none of us can actually know, that the player budget remains the same.
And why wouldn't it? If you're Tony Bloom you've built a squad that can compete for the play offs, injuries aside it should be capable of doing so again, that's his view.
I suspect Gus's view was we should spend more again and strengthen further and push for the top two. But every manager will want more money so you can't fault him for that. Equally Bloom obviously feels for now that he has done enough, and spent enough on transfers already. You can't really fault a man that has put hundreds of millions of pounds into the club.

Does this go back to the story given for when GM left - the 2 budget pot saga? (1 pot for transfers and 1 for wages).
Gus got this changed to 1 pot for everything, did he not? So even though we may have not paid much in transfer fees this year, the pot would still be depleted by loans, signing on fees, agent fees, wages etc etc.
I guess what I am trying to say is that just because we spent 2m on Leo last Jan and have not spent 2m on anyone this, it does not mean that we have a spare 2m to spend in this year's budget.

I expect the medical budget is bigger than the player budget this year! All those operations, crutches and bandages to pay for, it's a good job the physiotherapy is done in house.

Are we sure he was misquoted? Or is it just Oscar said something that wasn't right, or was misleading, and the club with the permission of the newspaper got the change made? They are quite different. I suspect it was the latter.
Back on the original topic, Gus signed a five year contract in September 2011, along with Tanno (not sure about Chas).
He was sacked on 23rd June, which went to subsequent appeal, but it would be interesting to see in which year's accounts his compensation (if there is any) for the remainder of his contract appears. If we assume that he is on a good contract (say £1 million a year for him and Tanno) then if this is included in the playing budget (on the grounds that the manager/coach are part of the overall playing staff), then it could reduce what is available for player signings.
Lots of ifs in the above I appreciate, but the numbers might explain some of the confusion. We should also remember that last season the majority of the wages of Bridge, Upson and Hammond were being paid by their parent clubs. I suspect that is the case to a degree with Andrews and Ward though.

we may have spent 2m on Leo in Jan but i wouldn't be surprised if the accounts worked it over several years eg 500k per season for 4 seasons so taken out of 4 budgets rather than one. Additionally if they had worked it out like that they may have gone further and worked it out pro-rata so that a reduced chunk was spent out of last years budget as he was only here half a season with a larger chunk this season. That would also mean that this years budget has gone up but already accounted for

Just to clarify, Oscar was not misquoted, but the quote was taken out of context (and the Telegraph were happy to rectify in order to reflect the point Oscar was making). He was speaking about the cost saving the club has had to make to bring down the overall budget of running the club - however the playing budget has increased slightly on that of last year.
That was not always the case (as Tony points out in his SP interview) as we expected to have to cut the playing budget by a small amount. However, the work that went in to cost saving in the summer and additional revenue generation (with huge help from the fans) has meant we have been able to slightly increase the budget.
