Barnsley wearing Palace's kit

how long has that been the rule because i'm sure i can remember games relatively recently with players having only numbers.

Don't know when it was first introduced but it has been mandatory for a while. Football League rules are -:

33.10 Numbering of Players' Shirts. When playing in a Match each Player shall wear a shirt on the back of which shall be prominently displayed his shirt number and above that his name. At the start of each Season each Club must provide to the Executive on the appropriate form details of shirt numbers allocated to each squad Player. Each Player will retain his designated number for the Season unless he leaves the Club in which case his number may be re- allocated to a new Player. Each time a squad number is allocated during the Season the Club must provide full details on the appropriate form.

33.11 Numbering of Players' Shorts. Players' shorts must be numbered to correspond with the number on his shirt. The number will be on the front left leg of the shorts, measure no more than 4 inches and be clear and visible.

Thinking about it i think it was an international match, possibly a friendly involving brazil and someone, where the players had no names but then Fifa probably has different rules.

There are different rules applied to Internationals , some countries field a team with only numbers on the back of the shirt , others include the name as well.

It makes me feel a little ill to even slightly be seen to defend Palace, but say Leicester had turned up yesterday with two sets of kit, neither of which the referee would let them wear because they were too close to ours.


Given that this is entirely their screw-up, would you be happy for us to (1) concede ground and have the Albion turn out in our away kit, or (2) give Leicester twenty shirts from the superstore, free of charge? I must admit, I'd be slightly inclined to think it was their problem. Frankly, it annoyed the hell out of me that one time we agreed to play in our away kit at home because Reading's (this is genius) away shirt was yellow & blue hoops, as opposed to their usul white & blue hoops..

Until 1960 Celtic players never wore a number on the back of the shirt , the number appeared on the front and back of the shorts.

But how much do replica shirts actually cost the club. £5 or £10 each maybe? So that's a loss of around a hundred odd quid to the club.

I think Edna and you are both right. Barnsley were at fault with the part she mentioned, and Palace were at fault with the part you recalled.
