Leicester lost £15.2 million in their last accounts, Cardiff £13.6 million, Derby £7.9 million, Leeds lost about £4 million, but their revenue (at £32 million) is higher than that of the Albion. Leeds also sold their season ticket income for 2012/13 AND 2013/14 to another company before the start of the current season, as part of the Bates masterplan.

By all means have a pop at Gus, but for me his pluses far outweigh his minuses. However Tony Bloom walks on water as far as I am concerned.

You have a point.

I cannot understand how dull Steve Bruce, with a dull looking Hull team (about 3 very average ex PL players in there), have accumulated so many points compared to our star studded squad?

I hate to say it, but in the transfer market and in tactics, is he a better manager?

Similarly with CP, their transfer spend and wages are tiny compared to ours, but the have scored so many goals and had more wins. How?

steve bruce is a better manager, gus still learning the ropes, but i like what i see

The Cardiff loss will be far greater for 2011/12.

No League Cup final run, and they spent last summer massively improving their squad further.
Not just in fees, but wages ... eg Bellamy would be on good money.

The owners don't seem to care. They had a plan, and Mackay's pulled it off seemingly.

What we were doing 3 years ago is completely irrelevant. We are now something like the 15th best supported club in the country, with a squad peppered with a level of quality not seen at this club for many a year, if ever.

The '5 year plan' is appropriate though, but that relies on steady improvement, and I'm genuinely not sure we're seeing that. It's a marginal call at best.

I've only seen us once this season, and four times on the telly, so pinch of salt and all that, but I listen to the commentary, listen to the Roar, read stuff on here and it 'feels' like we've improved markedly, but there is just that pesky little issue of getting the ball in the net more that's holding us back. Certainly by all accounts we murdered forest 0-0, murdered bolton 1-1, dominated Birmingham 2-2, were all over Blackburn last night 1-1 - I don't remember that last season. Instead I remember Forest dicking all over us and Buckley scoring a 90th minute winner. and then we repeated that over and over to finish as high as we did. As an all-round team we've surely improved in almost every department, with the exception of that first season spirited attitude perhaps draining away a bit. I remain confident that the floodgates will open at some point, that Ulloa will go on a Nogan-esque scoring spree, but it may be next season rather than this.

Would you really like your club to be owned by a Russian or an Asian business company - a rich man's plaything or tax write off scam?

Where is the soul of those clubs? What happens when the business men turn aside? Look at Portsmouth, they would love a local wealthy-but-not-megabucks owner

This is only our second season up in the Championship, let's not be impatient

if there is a 3rd season in prospect next year at the Amex of great highs, big lows, but ultimately which ends with upper mid table stability at best because GP cannot quite get a promotion sustaining winning team together, the crowds will start to dwindle quite quickly. A 30,000+ stadium was built to be full and house 'big' matches each and every game and so far its been well filled based from what i can see mainly on the emotion of fans so long denied somewhere to call a proper home - only on rare occasions has it been filled by the quality of the performances seen. The owners/directors will know full well that emotional response to attend games will fade soon enough (it already has a little by the very visible paid no shows in all stands) and the extra 15-18,000 'new' (as in attending games now) fans will demand to be entertained and simply will not put up with cold wet mid week nights paying top money to watch the likes of Bristol, Barnsley and Peterborough etc - i know long term fans will say if the new ones don't like they can 'off' but if they think the money people at the club share this mentality when the 15-18,000 newer (or returning fans) money is most definitely needed to sustain what they've built, they may be in for a quite shock. Paul Barber's financial decisions (which he is very open and upfront about in fairness to him) at the moment are solely about maximising profit and minimising loss and the easiest and longest term way to do that is sell out the Amex and be in the Premiership. As much as GP's work in the past and at present deserves huge respect, if there is not clear evidence he can 'build' a serious promotion challenging team then he'll be judged the same as anyone else who doesn't hit their target.

Cardiff's owners have gambled on getting up this season, and if the gamble does not come off they might bugger off elsewhere, in the same style as many of Pompey's owners.

Tony Bloom is in it for the long term.

I keep seeing this parroted, please can you show me a direct quote where Bloom has said this?

I agree with a lot of the comments here- I fear that this is a season lost rather than consolidation and improvement, and could just as easily see us losing important players and manager over the close season rather than getting stronger for another push. Maybe Poyet will think to himself he's taken as us as far as he can with the experience in the team at the moment and we still can't close out games.

I'm being very pessimistic but all I see at the moment is Vicente, Upson, Bridge and potentially Bridcutt leaving, all quality players with massive experience and how are we going to replace them as well as generally improve the squad overall.

We will lose a lot of the League 1 players at least which might free up wages.

It'll be a shame to lose them, but we lost Crofts,Bennett, Murray and Noone yet kept getting better and moving up. Just a fact of life that teams lose players to the teams above them.

You forgot to mention Jake Robinson in that list

I don't buy the "he who has the most money (or loses the most money) does best" mantra.

Money helps tremendously - of course it does - but if it was only the biggest revenue (or biggest loss) that directly drove on-the-pitch success then there'd be little point turning up to play games. We'd just open the accounts and record the result as measured by financial performance.

The Albion have a top 6 squad, but do not have a top 6 league position currently, but the margins are fine. If it was 3 up automatically and then playoff spots we'd be sitting pretty. Unfortunately for us, and Gus, it doesn't work like that in this division.

Gus is always moaning about something, usually money. This above all else is my biggest bug bare about him, he is like a old woman, moan, moan, moan all the time. When he has had everything he has asked for, just look at our squad list. Instead of f***ing moaning all the time, perhaps he should have another look at the Hull game and ask himself, what was so wrong with that performance, against the team now in second, that he felt the need to make three changes to a winning side???

He's not moaning though is he? He is pointing out that half of the task is money, because you need quality players. But he is also making the point that money is only half the task, because other teams that have spent a lot more than we have are not ahead of us by the same margin, because they are neglecting the other half, which is the football. All he is saying is that if we had the money, which is just one of those things a club has or not, then we would have the complete package. If anything he is saying credit to us, because we have the hard and most important part down.

I tried to find an equivalent for the championship, but couldn't find one.

I was for example, staggered to see Spanish Dave and Orlandi benched last night, it didnt seem to have any logic behind it. Make way for the dagger by all means, but why bench both of them after what I saw as a very decent performance against Hull.
Because there's a limit to how many players we can get on the field. How did Vicente do on Saturday? Great, so he starts ahead of Lopez and Orlandi - a good decision, as he was great yesterday too. Hammond was in because Gus thought it would be a physical battle in the centre, and Buckley started because Gus thought he was fit. Gus also wanted to try two strikers with Hoskins (something I thought most here wanted to see), so that meant no room for Lopez or Orlandi. They both get plenty of games, the rest shouldn't hurt them.

Brighton have a very good squad, Poyet has bought a lot of experienced players in and must have spent a fair wad doing so, he's certainly not concentrated on looking to the future and bringing through youth, so it's clear that there are short term goals and in my opinion it's a squad that should be top 6 at least.....

i think uve cracked it there we need to start with 13 ..seriously though if he makes changes he's tinkering if he doesnt he's stubborn...starting lineup seemed fine to me

Just looks like he's trying to whore himself around for bigger jobs again if you ask me with his comments about guaranteeing winning football if only he had a bigger budget.

One of the problems with the 'lets get promoted in a season or two' argument is that, well, it isn't just up to us. Who knows how competitive the league will be next season, or the season after?

.

Would it not be fair to assume that when FFP kicks and all clubs tighten their belts that it follows that the Championship will start to weaken?
If, and it's a massive if, we can keep up the gate receipts up by keeping the players who play the football that fans want to come and see, then our chances of promotion next year are greater as the squads of those teams around us weaken.
