Not the real one
Who would have thought we'd have a u turn government when we have a coalition? Well done Lib dems (muppets) for voting against boundary changes. So we now get the prospect of another Tory coalition, or Labour goverment. I dont know which us worse. Politics in this country has to change.

A flagship education policy bites the dust but there is a fallback to make exams a more accurate assessment of education standards. GCSE's will become reputable again with less emphasis on marks for coursework , multiple choice questions and answering a question in six words or less. How will the kids of today adapt to a written exam requiring answers in the form of a short essay ?

English is a compulsory subject as far as i'm aware and is completely essay based. (at least it was when i did it 4 years ago)

I'll agree with MCQs, they have no place in examinations, i know somebody who got a B in GCSE science by doing a pattern on the multiple choice sheet; similarly, I won a silver maths challenge award by filling in the dots at random...

Putting everything on one final exam is no way to educate children. It will all become tactical, teachers will teach the minimum amount required in order to get the marks and kids will never revise everything from the whole year. Modular assessment at least allows kids to concentrate on one part of a subject at a time. I can remember a lot of things from subjects that were modular, but the couple of subjects which were 100% riding on the last exam; i can barely remember a thing. (English being one of them! :dunce:)

And your Blair 'for the working class# is now a multi millionaire....don't forget he went to uni as well...as for Brown we are now flooded with immigrants and he left the country with no money and trillions in debt....great were'nt they!

Can't stand the man. I don't think he knows what he stands for anymore. He does actually, filling his pockets on the very system that has wrecked the world finances and thrown hard working people in to poverty.
Their all the bloody same I'm afraid. Labour legacy for me is everything you have pointed out above.

I find this all very hypocritical. God and then the Stock Market. Just my opinion.

I'm not sure the stock markets wrecked the world.

You cannot spin this into anything other than piss poor governing.
...or rabid anti Conservative Party bigotry, just because you feel the need to.

I don't thinl Blair will ever be held to account for the shambles he caused. I believe he is now one of the richest ex-priminisers the UK has ever had.

The reason why GCSE's have lost their credibility is the ease of getting a top grade by not really trying. When I took my GCE 'O' Levels it was all down to a final exam to test your knowledge of the subject plus they would deduct marks for punctuality , grammar and spelling mistakes.

I believe it was the same man that appointed Andy Coulson and chose Rebecca Brooks as a close friend, lol.

The national debt was significantly less under labour than it is now. And with the exceptional elements of bank bailouts taken out, it was less than they inherited in 1997 right up to the impacts if the credit crunch in 2009.

But you fail to acknowledge that it was Brown that actively encouraged the American financial institutions to give mortgages to those that couldn't even afford the first repayment!!!!!!!

Nothing to do with it. Change needed just not a bac. And I really dont want THIS government making similar mistakes to those made by Blair and Brown.

What, out of interest, do you consider were the mistakes made by Blair and Brown in relation to the education system?

Perhaps they should try and respond in 140 characters or less?

What they should do then is teach kids to write Tweets instead of sentences. A series of tweets relating to the same topic could be called a nest and several nests are a flock. Who needs paragraphs and essays!!!!!

Gove statement on GCSE U-turn: Politics live blog | Politics | guardian.co.uk

I am totally glad about this u-turn but you have to question a government which have made so many important policy f*** ups and reverses. Clueless. What a total and utter waste of EVERYONE'S time this particular issue has been.

I suppose this issue distracted the Tories from destroying what is left of the economy even further.

And to head off the 'they listened to the people' comments you listen to the people before you make an decision not the other way round.

NHS in tatters, Stafford Hospital kills more than the taliban, children leaving school not able to read or write correctly, care industry not fit for purpose, banking industry taking the economy down, no aircraft carriers for the navy, 5m + on various benefits, immigration not working for those who live here, massive public corruption in the police force, local government, in parliament and a transport system that is out of date and thats just the previous Labour administration. Give Dave a break, this mess can't be changed in one parliament, Blair/Brown damaged this country immeasurably with their money can fix all approach and buying votes with benefits for all. Try going into the interior of Greece and see what is really happening to those who can't pay their debts. I'll give Dave time like i'll give Gus time.

I see what you have done there! Totally ignored what was inherited by labour in 1997. Do you remember the 80s when hospital ward after hospital ward was closed by the Tories. Nurse training was decimated and we therefore had to plunder nurses from abroad. You also blame any corruption in the Police on labour? Exactly how is the whole transport system out of date? Seem to recall that under labour, the rolling stock was upgraded with all slam door trains disappearing on the main line here in the south. You slag off labour for apparently buying votes with benefits but ignore the fact that tories helped millionaires etc with their removal of the 50p tax rate?

Brighton have just won 1 - 0 against one of the sides above us, and you're posting on this thread? Get a life!

Sorry, I'll go outside and do a few cartwheels down the street. Or maybe I'm a bit pissed off because I had to miss the match for a pantomime!!!!

You mean that rolling stock that was far more reliable and comfortable and could actually seat normal sized people without actually having to feel the sweat from a passenger sitting next to you ? Yes, great switch that one !
