Commentator said 'we're just having a bit of a lull'.

Oo, did they say "2023 was a great year of football, but we're just having a bit of a lull, with Palace vs Everton up next"?

I think it was a yellow card but DCL’s foot was too high and with studs up, he’s asking for trouble. Certainly on another day, perhaps many other days he would have gotten away with it tho. While VAR is involved here, this really is more about the rule makers wanting to get rid of a certain type of tackle where the player goes to the floor, is not therefore in full control and the foot is high. If it’s an injustice then they are the real culprits.

There is a parallel situation in rugby where lawmakers are trying to lower tackle heights and using draconian sanctions like red cards to change player habits. Plenty of grumbles there too but at least that’s aimed at the game hierarchy rather than video reviews and officials who have a tough task interpreting new guidelines

Michael Salisbury was the VAR. What a surprise!

I caught the arse-end of this. Didn't take a genius to predict it would carry all the entertainment of a burning orphanage did it.

Palace got their customary VAR gift but couldn't make use of it, set out to play like the away team against utter dreck, and swapped their usual jester outfits for some kind of Thunderbirds fancy dress tribute.

Jesus its so, so dismal there.

BTW Do we want to keep this thread open for all 3rd round games? I'm reliably informed there are 3 today...

The boy has just rolled in from up north and said some interesting things about the game atmosphere, which he said was good. To be fair he has only the East Stand to compare it to 🤣

Watched the second half in a pub after 5 aside. There were a couple of Everton fans, couple of Palace fans and a load of neutral fans. Not ONE person in the pub thought it was a red card. We all knew it would be given as soon as it went to VAR though.

Absolutely ludicrous decison made by people who have no clue about playing the game.
Ding ding ding that's the poiint I'm making.

The reason we have VAR isn't because Terry Henry punched a ball in the Emerald Isle, that was just the banner #TeamVAR could get behind.
We have it because every fine margin decision was pawed over frame by frame, from 8 different angles, by 5 people until 3 of them can finally decide 'the refs has a shocker there', 'that kind of decision can cost a club £100m', 'the ref is deciding the title not the players'.

"As soon as it went to VAR we all knew he was off" - because his foot was high, studs up, sliding in, and contact.
We can all see no force, minimal contact, certainly not enough to cause medical treatment (but that's a whole other thing), no intent, first ever red - neither of which are relevant.

Had DCL's foot been down, or just away, or even higher but away nothing would have happened - it was just in the sweet spot to get VAR nibbling.

Chances are it'll get overturned and all we're left with is the whole process that led us to VAR happening only in reverse.
With everyone left unhappy, instead of a few 'expert opinionators' who are paid to find the controversy.

Didn’t watch the game but the red card is all over social media.

It’s another atrocious decision to go with that second yellow Forest got for a clean tackle. If this is a red there would be one every game. We’ve got to allow players to challenge.

DCL should have his ban rescinded and Kavanagh and whoever was on VAR should get a long ban instead.

Agree - a truly dreadful decision by all concerned. He could hardly have made a more gentle challenge for the ball. What a waste of time, effort, resources - no actually not Palace, the mess of VAR and its application in UK in particular.

Even if we get a bad decision at Stoke tm at least we won’t be standing around for ages waiting while idiots in Stockley Park decide what should happen!

Having watched these I think its remarkable Dunk wasn't sent off against Spurs
