Arsenal fan, you say? I’m gobsmacked by that news.
I'm being transparent. I hate cheating, even if it's my own team. There is a big reason that our fanbase moans about referees the most.

Cleaning up referees would benefit us the most. It also goes against club tribal loyalties.

I cannot enjoy a win (of my own team) if it's due to referee error/corruption. I become dead inside. Zero joy or jubilation.

Watch the below penalty (2:45 in). This is a ludicrous penalty. This is the one occasion last season that we won a game from corrupt refereeing. I couldn't celebrate the performance or win after this game because it simply was not fair.

At this point, my hatred for corrupt referees exceeds any tribal loyalty. I specify my team as an example because that's the team I watch the most. I have deliberately taken time to actually sit down, study and analyse how matches are officiated.

I am active on social media, actually spelling out how referees manipulate PL games in great detail. Ex-PL referee Keith Hackett follows my main social account where I regularly call officials corrupt and spell out specific patterns which cannot statistically be a coincidence.

Interesting. Do you ever get "feedback" from the refs themselves. I guess not.

Thought the ref was useless, erratic and looked out of his depth.

As a result he lost control and it became highly likely someone would see red, unfortunately for us it was Dunk.

Welcome to NSC, if corrupt, dodgy officiating and VAR is your thing, you'll be spending quite a bit of time here.

We've been on the receiving end of some absolute stinkers.

Really?? Not sure thats right at all. I just want officiating which isn't inconsistent. Card someone for kicking the ball away, then not do the same for the next instance.
It's a small point and not sure it undermines your overall point, but this specific thing isn't a massive issue for me depending on circumstances. Brighton kicking the ball away eats at time for Forest to get the goal to come back and get level with us. There is a clear advantage to the team kicking the ball awat. Forest kicking the ball away while losing eats away at their own time, giving them less opportunity to get back into the game. They're harming themselves as much as they are harming our chances, So I can understand booking one team but not the other in this sort of circumstance.

You know that's what he said? Some reports this morning suggest it was very different to your suggestion of "excuse me sir. Would you mind if one asks why you gave that decision?"
Both of you are right in different ways. There's no need for either of you to pick sides.

1) Players abuse referees all the time. This is not me defending it (I think that it should be stamped out like Rugby) to say that the rules should be applied equally. Whatever Dunk said should be in principle a red card for any dissenting player from now on. At least if you take the angle that different referees have different interpretations, Anthony Taylor has to uphold the same standards week to week.

2) The PGMOL should come clean on the decision making process behind the red card. Explain what he said (or why it's a red). They should then tell the public and footballing world that this is how referees should continue to police dissent. To be fair, they did say so last season that they would clamp down on dissent, however this isn't being applied equally.

Some people who are better at lipreading than I am said they they saw Dunk call Taylor a 'bald prick'. I've seen many players call referees far worse in games this season (Taylor the windup merchant gets more than other refs). We need to be sure that Taylor will be consistent going forward and we need to know why this wasn't punished by him before the game. Did Dunk say something particularly worse than what other players do?

This is how a transparent, fair system should work. Everybody should be accountable; players, coaching and referees. It isn't accountable if certain players and teams are allowed to get away with things and others can't. Same with referees.

I do a bit of hockey umpiring. Any foul language and players are off. Same in rugby. If football wants to improve refereeing standards then you need to stop all abuse of the ref because that abuse will stop good people getting involved. Otherwise, We will end up with only people who are arrogant and don’t give a stuff what anyone says and these people are the more likely ones to make the game about them and to not reflect on mistakes/double down.

If dunk swore at him he should be off BUT then so should every other player who swears at a ref. And yes I mean even those who just say “eff off” at a decision not at the ref. The problem is that fans would moan about it when it was introduced and it would soon stop (just like other sensible interventions every season).

Yes it was via VAR but both pens were correctly given.

If Dunk has been thick twice and broken the now-well-known rule twice then he's been correctly sent off.

Fine by me.
I don’t think the 2 are compatible. Ours was way more a pen than theirs - had pulled him on his neck. You could barely see contact with Hinsh and he threw himself to the floor knowing he was getting nowhere near the lane cross Bart took. Possibly a hand on hand pull but hard to see and no way a clear and obvious error. I understand why Dunk was furious - it wasn’t a pen at all and was only given to even things up and because the home crowd were screaming as usual there.

Players don't usually kick the ball away to waste time. It's so that defensive players can get back into position and get settled behind the ball. These are rudimentary dark arts. Was this the case with the Forest player? I didn't see that so I can't judge. Just putting it out there.

The circumstances excuse only washes if me if Taylor referees these circumstances the same way each individual game regardless of team. You can't only judge the refereeing style by one game.

Theyll gladly send Dunk off away at Forest, but 1-1 in a potential title decider of City Arsenal and Haaland says it, they'll be no straight red.

I'm a bit of a stickler for rules (which I know makes me hard to please and a bit boring) but if we are talking about applying the letter of the law, advantage doesn't come into it. I think it sits in this category in the rule book, but it may be referred to elsewhere too:

DELAYING THE RESTART OF PLAY

Referees must caution players who delay the restart of play by:
  • appearing to take a throw-in but suddenly leaving it to a team-mate to take
  • delaying leaving the field of play when being substituted
  • excessively delaying a restart
  • kicking or carrying the ball away, or provoking a confrontation by deliberately touching the ball after the referee has stopped play
  • taking a free kick from the wrong position to force a retake

Here's one last season that still really, really annoys me. Spurs away. We're on top of Spurs and we get a corner.
To stop a quick start, Perisic deliberately kicks one of the spare balls onto the pitch to stop play progressing. Ref
stops the match so that said ball can be removed from the field.

No yellow card given. Nothing. Zero.

Same match of the "Mitoma" non-penalty farce.

You know that wasn’t my suggestion, so stop being silly.

A skipper is entitled to approach the referee, and Taylor was very quick to dish out the yellow.

I noticed in 2020/21 that they would always interfere in title races to spice things up. If City or Liverpool were running clear at the top, they would give every single decision against the team running away with it.

I remember one moment when City were struggling behind Liverpool in October. They faced West Ham and drew 1-1. In the last minute of the game, Coufal wins the ball high up cleanly and he's through on goal around the halfway line. The referee blows the full time whistle and books him for a foul of the City defender. Nobody spoke about it after the match.

The referee was none other than Anthony Taylor.

I’m still annoyed about the deliberate handball by Burnley a few seasons ago, where the player was still laughing about as he walked off. A more deliberate move you’ll never see again.

I think I could get through at least 10 card-worthy descriptions of Taylor in 5 seconds.
I blame the people around Ronald as they were chanting what Dunk probably said!

It is a red under the laws of the game but guarantee me Taylor would send Van Dijk off for the same quote and I will call you a liar.
