It was very amusing to watch Dunk, Tomori and Colwill pass it around until one of them plays it to Johnstone and he lumps it to "the big man up top", every time. What a shame we didn't have an 80's style big man up top.
It was embarrassing. I couldn't even tell you who Johnson plays for. I have seen him on TV, I think playing for someone like Derby. What the actual f***? Watching him is like being transported back to the 90s.

Now watch Southgate drop him for the slab.
That will be embarrassing.

Henderson is getting pelters but he had a hell of a lot of the ball. He was the key midfielder. However he was so predictable, always pushing the ball wide to Alexander Arnold (who wasn't usually there as he's playing deep these days) or Bowen. That said I though Henderson was OK.

OK, elephant in the room time: sock boy has no pace. Since Pep has coached him to not spend his entire time drawing fouls, I am at a loss to understand what he brings to the side. Incisive passing? M'eh. Shooting prowess? Certainly not.

But....there is something about the way we set up that means every player is playing at 90%. Poor old Dunk has few chances to do defence splitting passing because the attackers don't more around in the right way. None of the passing is 'dangerous' high risk stuff like what we do. Safe, safe, safe.

And I hate to say it but we missed Harry Kane and Kyle Walker.

Agree with that.

The thing that really must have confused Dunk is that when he has the ball against a low block with a centre back alongside him for Brighton, our fullbacks are pushed up giving him progressive pass options. This was not the case last night, way too many players were deep, almost on the same line as Dunk. Dunk seemed reticent to pass to them because he saw no attacking value in doing so. He, more than anyone would realise the stark difference between Southgate’s tactics and DeZerbiball.

Sockbay plays the same role that Mitoma does but in a much, much more limited way. Whereas Mitoma will often come inside and lay the ball off then run through the lines for the return, or will go on the outside and head for the touchline on an inside angle towards the goal, Grealish can only come inside and lay the ball off. He will sometimes run through the lines for the defence-splitting through ball but does not have the pace to get there often. He will only get to the touchline when the ball is being played in and around the area.

Regarding the way England set up; it was noticeable that they were trying to play out from the back and that Australia were pressing high and hard but there were none of the triangular passes to break the press because the CMs were not actively showing for the ball and playing out to the fullbacks. When they did come to receive from Dunk or Tomori they generally had no option other than to play it straight back. I was thinking while watching that Gareth appears to be trying to play through the high press like de Zerbi but has no idea how to coach the players to do so. Maybe he should let Dunk and Colwill do the coaching?🤣🤣

Defending Johnstone here a bit, I think when playing out from the back it’s best to have the back 4 and keeper to have played together a few times as training is not the same, it’s too easy to pass it to the keeper then not find space allowing a forward to chase the keeper down and in doing that the keeper lumps it forwards in panic.

I think Johnstone has the most clean sheets in the premier league this season and last night was his 4th clean sheet in a row.

But he did look nervous I thought.

In all honesty I completely forgot he played for Palace until I saw your post. I assume that Hodgson does not ask him to play the ball short but prefers him to hit it long to the wings or up the middle? He certainly looked a bit panicky when he was being closed down and he won't have been helped by the unwillingness of the CMs to offer for the ball, often leaving only 2 options; lump it long or play it to the wide CM or FB. I expect the standing instruction from Southgate was "put your foot through it".

this with bells on. I was thinking I wonder if Southgate went into the dressing room and said ‘Dunky, can you please show us how you play this style of football’ to which Dunky replies ‘You could have asked me many times how to Play like it, dare say you could have picked me for the last 2 or 3 years but you didn’t or rather wouldn’t, and instead kept on with Slabhead, so in answer to your question ‘nah I can’t and you go fook yourself you pratt’
