This is not restricted to Liverpool. I have an Arsenal season ticket holding mate and the season tickets there are treated like a franchise. The original owners often haven't set foot in the stadium for years, if ever. I have sat in my mate's second seat. After the game I discovered I was surrounded by Brighton supporters taking advantage of pals' second seats.

Man U fans come from Guildford, scousers are known to nick things, Luton is a shit hole, all Man City fans are plastic and they can't fill their ground. Is all of that true? No. Is there enough of an element of truth for it to be used as a piss taking weapon? Absolutely. Is this the next set of speech we're cancelling? Maybe Jimmy Carr was right.

I remember when Man City where due to pick up the PL trophy a few years back and social media was awash with 'Brighton fans' that wanted tickets anywhere in the stadium and were willing to pay top dollar for the privilege. I contacted one of the 'brighton fans' and advised I had a couple of tickets but was due in Manchester for business the entire week leading up to it.

For some reason that wasn't an issue as said 'brighton fan' was also due in the manchester area at exactly the same time. What are the chances.

Yes being anti Liverpool did take on a weird rightwing political tinge in a way that, say, being anti Manchester United didn’t. Obviously stems from the 1980s when the city tried to stand up to Thatcher and from then on became a trope for the rightwing columnists to stir up at every opportunity, particularly when the anti Murdoch boycott took off and became successful within the city. Boris Johnson was arriving pretty late to that party when he eventually got round to puttiing in his two pennyworth. Always found It a good Rorschach test to ask anyone about this. Staggered over the years by the poison that drips from supposedly intelligent people who will never be shaken from the belief that they did kill their own despite all the evidence and findings of wrongdoing by officialdom, there’s a whole poisonous mixture of things going on there in that pot, a rightwing radicalisation, hatred of working class, general snobbery, even a weird belief that’s it’s not an English city because of its historical immigration patterns

Again you are conflating a range of different issues as if this is the Liverpool phenotype.

Even so. Even if all true (much of it is) it doesn't make Johnson's posturing right, though. Moreover the fact he did it for 'likes' shows that this view about Liverpool is liked, and this includes an attitude outside Liverpool that the people there are 'milking' Hillsborough grief. I have heard the sentiment voiced by vox-pops on radio 5.

A month or so ago Adrian Chiles interviewed a former policeman who aired all the tropes about drunken thieving scousers being primarily responsible for Hillsborough. Because Chiles is not fit to do interviews he wasn't paying attention and the comments went unchallenged. He was forced to apologise later.

I have just been looking a few things up. It wasn't just Johnson. Here is an example of Cameron suggesting that Hillsborough was just bad luck. Back then most of the nation regarded the Hillsborough 'moaners' as self-absorbed self-pitying bores. Cameron (who knows f*** all about football as he showed later as a life long Villa, er. West Ham fan". Tropes and memes....:

I think that's OK, but I also think it's OK for me to therefore call them hypocritical ****s who would doubtless make a fuss if one of theirs was unlawfully killed, blamed for their own death, and denied justice for years. It's a valid point IMO.
A couple of the mods seem to like getting involved in personal beefs with other posters and they should really be above that as they are no better than the trolls they sometimes ban.
It would be good if there was a way to ignore this but it could be overridden for important announcements.

I raised this before but was told it wasn't possible.

There's an 'air of superiority' from one of the mods ... belittling - even bullying - anyone they like! Seems like it's acceptable mod behaviour though!

My father was born in Liverpool and grew up there and supported them. That rubbed off on me when I started to get into football in 1970 as a young boy of 8 years old. My dad worked every Saturday all his working life when he moved down south - so he wasn’t able to take me to football locally. Since moving to Sussex I am very much a Brighton fan and I 100% want us to win next Sunday. But yes, I still have a ‘soft spot’ for Liverpool and I will not apologise for that!

Folk take issue not so much with the supporting of big clubs by those who have no connection as the attitude of many of them.

For me there can only be three teams, Albion where I grew up, Aldershot Town where I am from originally, and Whitehawk who are my local non-league team.

I always reference the words of an old Bradford Park Avenue supporter who told me many moons ago that they would probably have survived if folk hadn't been buggering off to support Leeds United.

As a kid I had an obsession with Aston Villa. It all started when I was them in the school Subbuteo league. If ever I played the game again they are the only team I would be (I have Subbuteo if anyone fanciers a game..). But I stopped following them when they won the league and focused on Albion.

When I started watching football the country over in the late 80s I would watch Villa one week and Albion the next. I soon just watched Albion (even though Villa were a top division team) as well as Shots on the odd Friday night. The reason was I felt no connection with Villa anymore. It was just a childhood crush. I refuse to believe that anyone who supports a big club with no connection could get as much joy out of them winning a major trophy as I got when Albion made it to the Premier League or even when Aldershot Town made it back to the football league.

My Man U brother-in-law asked me what was going wrong - I replied that it was because we had come up against a proper team who tackled, attacked and were full of fight. Unlike the teams we beat 3-1 recently....

A (Manchester born) United fan I work with asked me if I had recovered from the weekend mauling. I responded that it could have worse - we could have lost at home to Palace!

To be fair to him, he took that in the spirit it was intended as we both have to face a Palace colleague in the office tomorrow.

I can't be absolutely certain - obviously - but the comment is in line with a number of other similar ones we've seen on here before which most definitely were linking to Hillsborough.
