Apologies if there's already been a thread on this but having read an article on the leading contenders, who do you think should light the Olympic Flame in the Olympic Stadium just two weeks today??

Who are the leading contenders? One would assume Redgrave, Kelly Holmes, that sort of thing?

I'll go for someone from The Only Way Is Essex.

For me it has to be Sir Steve Redgrave.

I would bloody WEEP if it ended up being Beckham.

Not out of joy, I should add.

Lots of good contenders:

Sir Steve Redgrave - Good shout.
Lord Sugar - Just, no.
Lord Coe - Done a massive part in organising the games, and a great Olympian.
Daley Thompson - Not well known enough, I feel.
Justin Bieber - Erm, no! Firstly he's Canadian; secondly he's not that great; thirdly, what's he achieved to deserve to light the flame?
The Queen - Good shout.
David Beckham - National treasure and helped us get the Olympics.
Paul McCartney - Not for me, thanks.
Tony Blair - No.
Michael Parkinson - Famous, but not enough?
Ant & Dec - Some of my friends would practially jizz themselves, but no thanks.
Simon Cowell - aren't the games sponsored enough already? Don't want to feed his power fetish any further either.

Somewhat depressing that you only have one woman in your list, and she's the bloody head of state. Could you not think of a single female sporterer (or any profession, to be honest) worthy of the honour?

For CRYING OUT LOUD! David Beckham did not "help us get the Olympics". He just appeared on a few banners and shook a few hands. Do we REALLY think that the International Olympic Committee make the decision as to which vastly expensive and incredibly detailed bid would win based on the fact that David Beckham wanted it?

Perhaps that's where Paris went wrong? Perhaps they should have chosen a few of their retired World Cup winners to schmooze with the IOC, or to hand out Yves Saint Laurent branded gift bags to the delegates from Uganda, Surinam and Papua New Guinea. If ONLY they'd brought on Barthez, everything would have been fine and they wouldn't have been left standing forlornly in the soggy Champs Elysees, weeping tears of frustration as Les Rosbifs started un partie magnifique dans Place du Trafalgar.

I have no problem with Beckham as a person, but this idea that he was (a) responsible for the bid and its consequent success and (b) deserves some kind of reward for that, is utterly ludicrous.

Why? Surely it should be an English ICON? I can't think of many better options than DB.

By the way, on the Magic news this morning they said he has ruled himself out, so it's not a scenario you need worry about!

Yeah, don't let the pesky Scots and Welsh in on our ENGLISH games.

And with all due respect, I think Beckham has probably ruled himself out to avoid any later embarrassment. It's a bit like if he'd ruled himself out of Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad isn't it? Somewhat unnecessary.

surely that rowing bloke what won loads of medals will do it, won't he?

Or Daley Thompson for having a spectrum game based on his efforts
