Yep, that's pretty much how I see it too. Really hope Rushworth and McGill are loaned rather than sold (may need a new contract for McGill if he's not going to leave for free after a loan though?) Not sure what's 'unfortunate' about Khadra and Zeqiri - both below our level now, shirley.
McGill signed a new two-year deal (with a further one-year option) just a month ago.

If we don’t buy anyone else (which we probably will)

And we sell Caicedo (who knows)

We can start the season with a team and squad like this ......

Steele

Veltman Dunk Webster Estupinan

Gross Dahoud

March Lallana Mitoma

Welbeck

Subs - Verbruggen / Van Hecke / Lamptey / Milner / Gilmour / Sarmiento / Enciso / Ferguson / Pedro

Now my point is not to pick a team, as I’m sure you’ll have a different selection opinion. It’s to do with the quality of the bench and the quality of those not able to make the bench

I couldn’t fit in Alzate, Ayari, Buenanotte, Adringa, Undav and Moder. (plus of course a lot of young talent likely to be loaned or sold)

Now I get the point, there will be a lot of games and TB promised RDZ we could fight on 4 fronts. We don’t know if there might be one or two injuries and we’ll certainly need the squad through the season. I get all that

But still, to not be able to get those 6 players on the bench is quite incredible. And it’s plausible we’ll add at least 2, maybe 3 new players.

Good post. If we get Bassey and a Colwill replacement we'll have two complete teams that would be competitive in the PL. Exciting times.

I should have made it clearer I meant loans for one of McGill or Rushworth (I’d expect one to be kept here as third choice) and sales for Schrepen and Sanchez.

Unfortunate for Khedra and Zeqiri because I rated both of them and they showed glimpses that they might make it here and now probably won’t.

Khedra looked good in a couple of pre-seasons, and Zeqiri suffered from being a victim of Potters Positioning Bingo when he did get on the pitch.

We have surpassed their level now but you can still feel disappointed for a player when they don’t make it here.

Makes me realise what a headache De Zerbi is going to have. Also makes me more convinced that Ayari will be loaned out. We’ve got so many options in those central positions

Minus the eight highlighted who are usually injured or teetering on the edge of their next injury

Minor comment, but surely Gilmour and Alzate are classified as HGPs?

Gilmour - yes makes sense. Alzate - agreed - but can anyone confirm or point me to a source that does likewise. HGP rules make my head hurt. !!

To be an HGP a player needs to have spent 36 months registered to clubs in England before the end of the season they turn 21.

Alzate was with Leyton Orient before we signed him when he was 18 so he easily qualifies as an HGP.

Plus he’s confirmed as an HGP in this list released after the January 2022 transfer window when PL squads were updated.

Three or more years signed with an English FA affiliated team before they turn 22, I believe.

Well without even thinking about signing on fees, we've spent more than we've brought in so far.

Likely big money for Caicedo, though, and varying potential lesser fees for Sanchez, Lamptey, Karbownik, Khadra, Zeqiri, and Connolly.
